Chapter 222
HANNAH
I dumped the paper bag in Willa's laps, and snatched up my phone.
"It's Cade," I informed her excitedly before pressing the phone to my ear.
"Hello, baby." He said and I smiled widely, asking all about their travels.
He told me they had just gotten to the pack and were settling in. His voice was abruptly replaced by Jace's who must have snatched the phone away from his brother.
I spoke to all of them. Willa did too. After listing everything she wanted them to bring for her from their trip, she handed the phone back to me.
"You girls at home?"
It was Cade, back on the line.
"No," I said. "We haven't been for hours."
"Where are you?" He asked. "I hope you're not out there partying with Willa."
I went on to tell him about the disturbance at the market.
"And I couldn't even find one clue," I finished. "No one knows who these men are."
"You can try again tomorrow," Cade said. "You both need to head back to the Estate now. It's getting late."
"We're with guards though," I reminded him.
"Doesn't matter. Those fuckers could decide to come back. I'm sure you don't have enough guards there to fight them if they do." He said. "It's better to be careful than sorry."
"Alright. We'll leave in a few minutes."
Willa and I hurried over our food when I told her what Cade had said.
"Makes sense," she said. "Daddy will definitely get worried if we stay out later than this."
About five minutes later, we were on our way to the waiting car.
As we walked, my eyes caught a familiar face. I thought he looked like Devin and on closer look, I realized it was truly him.
He was extremely easy to spot because who the hell wore clothes more suited for a party to the market?
As we approached, I was pleased to see that his nose was slightly out of joint. A piece of pink-coloured sticking plaster was on his cheek.
Willa spotted him a few seconds after I did. She pressed herself against me.
I wasn't bothered that he would approach us. After what my mates had done to him, he wouldn't dare come close. He lifted his gaze in our direction and our eyes met.
Slowly, his eyes widened but I didn't care. Willa and I would walk past him and say nothing.
We had just passed him when I heard what had to be his voice call out, "Willa?" as if he wasn't sure it was her yet.
"Willa!" he could more eagerly this time as we continued walking.
I heard Willa's sharp intake of breath.
I turned, hardly believing my ears. Did he have a death wish?
Devin was smiling at Willa. I glared at him but I could have been the parking lot sign for all the attention he paid me.
"Willa," he said again, his smile widening. "I almost couldn't believe it was you. What are you doing here? It's been so long we-"
I marched up to him and that finally got his attention. His eyes snapped back to me.
I poked him hard in the chest. He winced but held his ground.
"Are you out of mind?" I hissed. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
"The problem was between Willa and I," he said. "No one else should have gotten involved. I know you care about her and everything but you should have let us work out our differences."
"Differences!" I exclaimed. I found my voice had almost risen to a shout and lowered it. "Have you forgotten what you did to her, asshole?"
"Look, I really liked her, okay? I guess I just couldn't handle it when she didn't want me around anymore and that's why I made that little mistake. Willa and I can start over." He said.
"Maybe the beating her brothers gave you knocked a screw loose in that stupid head of yours. You and Willa are done. If you ever go close to her again, I'll put you in the hospital myself." I threatened.
His attention drifted towards Willa again. She was now walking quickly away, heading to the car. A guard rushed forward and held the door open.
"Willa wait!" Devin shouted and started forward. "Please just give me a minute."
I was so surprised that someone could actually be so stupid and clueless that he almost got past me.
I grabbed his shirt, yanked him back and planted a fist in his face.
"That's for not paying attention," I hissed.
He clutched his nose. His eyes were wide with surprise and for the first time, I wondered if Devin was soft in the head. Had he really for one moment believed I would let him anywhere Willa without beating on his ass after what he had done?
I punched him in the pit of the stomach. He clutched it. "This is for daring to think you could ever talk to her." I kicked him in the groin. He doubled over, his breath whistling between his teeth. "And that one is because I don't like you."
I stepped back. "That's the tip of the iceberg, Devin. I won't say this again. Stay the hell away from Willa."
