Chapter 292
WILLA
One arm of her jacket was soaked to the elbow.
Her long nails were caked with something that looked like blood. My blood.
I pressed a hand to my chest as I realized that she had tried to kill me.
My heartbeat sped up. I knew Naomi hated me but to try and murder me?
"Lucian..." Naomi managed and licked her lips.
Lucian didn't move. A muscle in cheek was twitching. His eyes, grim and glittering, were fixed on Naomi in a murderous glare.
"You," he said in a voice barely above a whisper. "You... you tried to kill her."
Naomi took several stumbling steps back. She continued to back away.
She got to the edge of the pool and nearly tumbled in herself. She was shaking her head back and forth.
"No," she whispered. "I- I didn't mean to. I mean, I wasn't going to. I was just trying to scare her. That's all." Seeming to take courage from Lucian's continued silence, she went on. "I- I couldn't kill anyone, Lucian. You know me. What are you thinking?"
Lucian closed the distance between him and Naomi in five long angry strides. This time Naomi started to fall into the pool.
Lucian's hand shot out. He grabbed her by the throat, pulled her to him.
"You tried to kill her," Lucian said. "And you still have the guts to lie to my face about it!"
"No!" Naomi said. "I swear I wasn't going to. I-"
Her words ended in a moan. Lucian's hand on her throat had tightened.
She tried to pry his fingers apart but I had been in his grip before and I knew her efforts were useless.
He pulled her to him, pushed her away and shook her like a rag doll.
"You think I'm a fool?" he yelled. "I could kill you right now. In fact, I want to."
Naomi's head whipped back and forth, sending droplets of tears flying.
"I'm sorry," she wailed. "I didn't mean to. I- I don't know what came over me. I just saw her kneeling there and I couldn't help myself. Lucian, please..."
A cough escaped my throat. Lucian went still. His head started to turn in my direction but stopped.
All at once, his rage grew. It came off him in waves. Naomi must have felt it too because she began to beg Lucian all over again.
Lucian dragged her forward, shoved her down until her knees hit the ground.
"Lucian!" she shrieked. "What are you-"
That was as far as Naomi got. There was a wet splash as Lucian shoved her head into the water.
I gasped, wrapped my arms around my knees. Naomi struggled. Bubbles floated to the surface as she tried to scream under water.
Abruptly, Lucian pulled her head back up. Naomi's mouth opened wide as she tried to breathe. Her eyes were bugging out of her head.
Her make up had run, leaving her face painted in a mess of black and pink. Lucian waited for just a few seconds and pushed her head back in.
It went on for a long time. Each time he brought Naomi back up, her struggles got weaker.
Finally, with a grimace of disgust, he pushed her away. She fell into the pool and quickly sat up, cringing away from Lucian.
She was moaning.
"Lucian, please," she said in a hoarse voice. "No more. No more."
"You should have thought of that when you tried to kill her," he said. "What did you think would happen? That you would get away with this?"
She got down on her knees, coughed, retched and said, "Please don't tell anyone. I will be expelled."
"The only way I won't report you to the school and the authorities is if you stay the hell away from Willa starting now," he said. "Cross her path again and what I did to you now will be child's play. I'll half kill you and then I'll hand you over after making sure you get the maximum punishment possible. Or I might just decide to kill you myself."
Naomi sobbed and started to cry. Lucian came over to where I was.
His sharp eyes took me in. His hands roamed over my body, possibly checking for breaks and wounds.
"I'm okay," I mumbled.
He ignored that and swung me up into his arms like I weighed nothing. He turned to Naomi again.
"We're done," he told her.
"What?" she said, crawling over to meet him. "No-"
"This shit between us has been over for a long time," he said. "Now I'm making it official. Stay the fuck away from me, Naomi if you know what's good for you."
Lucian walked away with me in his arms, leaving Naomi sobbing with her head pressed into the dirt.
