Chapter 231
WILLA
"Still, that doesn't hold much water here, young lady. You see, despite all that, you're still a werewolf and just a little above the Omegas. The real high rankers are the Lycans, followed by most of the other supernaturals. You would do well to study and keep your head down here. A lot of the others won't take to you being around them so much. Fair warning."
He cleared his throat and his eyes flickered to the door, a clear dismissal.
"Thanks," I said dryly, snatched up my class schedule and stalked out of the office.
There was a line in front of the student admin's office. A line I joined. When it got to my turn, the woman took a glance at my name on the list and motioned for me aside.
"Wait your turn," she said.
"But it is my turn," I protested, but she had already turned to the next student, who was obviously Lycan.
I barely stopped myself from giving her a piece of my mind. Worchmount was a very private, very exclusive school, and I didn't want to get in trouble on my first day here.
I was one of the last students she attended to. I eventually left the office, fuming, hoping for an end to this horrible, totally unfair day. Then I got another glimpse of the school's impressive building, and I thought that after a rough start, my day could only get better.
I was wrong.
The campus, the living quarters of the students, were blocks of impressive buildings. Using the detailed instructions the snooty student's admin had given me, I found my room.
"Room 012," I said under my breath. "Here goes."
I knocked, opened the door, and stared for a moment at the very large, well-furnished room. It beat the dorm rooms of other schools I had seen.
"Hi," I chirped as I moved in, trailing my fingers along the nice furniture.
Three girls, my roommates, were sitting together cross-legged on one of the beds.
"Hi," I said again when they didn't say anything. "I'm your new roommate."
The three of them exchanged glances. One craned her neck forward, sniffed the air, wrinkled her nose, and said, "You're a werewolf, aren't you?"
"Yes," I replied.
My smile died a little as I recalled the dean's words.
"A werewolf!" exclaimed the second girl. "How could they possibly assign you to this room? There must be some kind of mistake."
She got out of bed, examined the paper I was holding, and flung herself back onto the bed with an offended huff.
The third girl shook her head. Silence stretched to an uncomfortable extent.
"I'm guessing you girls are all Lycans?" I said.
The first girl rolled her eyes.
"Of course we are." she said. "Do we look like we're one of... your kind?"
I decided to let that slide. I wanted to be friends with these girls if I could. I would be spending a lot of my time with them whether I liked it or not.
"My father was Alpha before he died," I said, hating that I had to push my family's rank out there to prove that I was something important, but having to do it anyway. "My brothers are Alphas now. I'm Willa Wallace, by the way, and you three are..."
"Naomi," the first girl said.
"Carmen," the second said.
"Lisa," the third said.
She had dyed hair. Pink on top, purple at the bottom, but she was as good-looking as the other two.
"Nice to meet you," I said. "Where-"
Lisa pointed a finger at the unmade bed.
"Yours," she said and turned her back on me.
The girls continued talking, completely ignoring me while I lugged my heavy suitcases in and started unpacking.
"Hey, new girl!" one of them called when I had been at it for a while.
It was Naomi, the dark-haired beauty. She tossed a lock of her hair over her shoulder and fingered the buttons on her designer blouse.
The other two stopped talking and seemed to... orient themselves around her somehow. In a manner of speaking, the Naomi girl seemed to be the leader of their pack.
"I just remembered to give you the heads up, girl," she continued.
"The name's Willa," I said.
I found I was liking my roommates less and less.
Naomi rolled her eyes. "Yeah. Whatever." She gestured to the other girls. "We usually have guests over. You have to respect them-"
"And stay out of their way whenever they're here," Lisa said.
"Mind your business, and maybe, just maybe, we'll get along," Carmen said.
I ignored that too. It seemed I would have to do a lot of ignoring if I didn't want to end up punching someone in the face.
"What guests?" I asked Naomi, curious in spite of myself.
"My boyfriend, the Lycan Prince, and his friends," she answered.
