Chapter 078

HANNAH

"But Hannah, you can't run away from who you are-"

"No!" I bit down on my lip and struggled not to raise my voice. "All I want is just to be allowed to live a simple life, like a normal person. I don't want the burden that comes with being a white wolf. I don't want to be some kind of- of freak. Is that too much to ask?"

"Hannah." Cade said, his voice sharpening, "Don't ever think or say that. You are not a freak. You're special."

"I don't want to be special. I want to be normal!"

"You don't know what you're saying." Jace placed both hands on my shoulders. "A lot of people would die to be what you are."

"I'm not a lot of people," I snapped.

The corner of his lips curved into a smile. His thumb gently brushed against my eyes. He caught a tear as perfect as a raindrop. "That's pretty obvious. But listen... Being the white wolf is not a curse. It's a blessing from the moon goddess."

"Excuse me," a guard said, running up to us. "The Alpha wants to speak with you." His dark eyes included me.  "All of you."

"Guess it's about what happened," Chase said as we all followed the guard back to the pack house.

As we entered, Alpha Wallace was leaning back in his chair, his brows drawn together, obviously deep in thought. His piercing gaze fell on me. His eyes widened a little when it took in my white hair. Jace gave my hand a reassuring squeeze.

"Shut the door," he said, jerking his chin at one of his sons without taking his eyes off me. "Is what Logan told me true?"

I bowed. "Yes, Alpha."

"Explain to me what happened."

In a few words, I told him about the coyote, my shifting, and everything else.

"Ah," he said after a long pause. "I never thought I would see something like this in my time. You are indeed favoured by the goddess. It's a privilege to have the white wolf staying under my roof."

"I was right then about training," the Alpha continued half to himself. At my quizzing glance, he explained. "White wolves come once in every century, so we were kind of working blind with this. Now we're sure that the kind of training you're being given can help you develop your abilities; you will have to train even harder, starting now.”

I felt my insides twist in knots. This 'white wolf' thing was obviously already changing my life in ways I wasn't ready for. The triplets, sensing my emotions, moved a little closer.

"Why?" Jace asked. "Why does she still have to train? She can shift now. Wasn't that the whole point of this training thing?"

The Alpha's face was grave as he said, "You are wrong, son." His eyes flickered to me. "I don't mean to frighten you, but now more than ever, you are in danger. You see, the white wolf is in danger more than anyone in the territory."

"Once people find out who you are, they will come after you with everything they've got," the Alpha continued. He paused. "And when I say 'people', I'm not just talking about those in this pack or Dawson's."

My heart slammed against my ribs faster now. Being targeted by Asher and his father was bad enough. How on earth could I cope with more enemies? I felt trapped, like a freak put out for display.

"Don't be scared," Alpha Wallace said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it. "As long as you are on your guard and prepared, you won't get harmed. Besides, my sons and I are not withdrawing our protection."

"Yeah, Hannah," Chase said, nodding in agreement. "Anyone trying to hurt you will have to go through us first."

I tried to force a smile for him. For the others. I couldn't. My shoulders sagged a little from the weight of responsibility that had settled over them.

Cade, his head sunk down to his chest, was pacing the room. Abruptly, he stopped in front of his father.

"So she trains harder. Then what?" he asked. If there was one thing about Cade, he always planned ahead.

The Alpha thought for a moment. "Then we do something equally as important to ensure her safety."

"What? What is it?" Cade asked at once. "Do we get to fight or something? Just say the word. I'll do anything at all to keep her safe."

Alpha Wallace raised a finger. His face grew even more serious.

"I wish you had shifted in front of fewer witnesses, Hannah, but what's done is done," he said. "Now listen to me carefully, all of you. No one, I repeat, no one outside this family and those who saw you shift in the woods must know what happened. No one must know you’re the white wolf.”
