Chapter 171
CADE
My footsteps echoed across the empty corridor leading to Hannah's room when I thought I heard a sound. I stopped, strained my ears to listen.
It came again. A soft, sighing sound followed by a moan.
I knew who was making that sound. I had heard those soft moans for more times that I could count. It was Hannah.
There were grunts too. Hannah was in there with Chase and Jace.
The thought sent a stab of almost physical pain through my heart.
Since yesterday, Hannah had been avoiding me like I was carrying some sort of disease. Now she was having sex with my brothers while she pretended I didn't exist. I didn't even know what I had done to offend her.
Another sound- that of a mattress softly creaking. I couldn't take it anymore. I had to get out of here before I gave in to the urge to burst through the door and demand answers from Hannah.
I turned on my heel and stalked back into my room. I slammed the door. It was childish behaviour as Hannah couldn't even hear it. I knew that but I was past caring now.
I flung myself into a chair by the window. I stared out of it, trying to erase what I had just heard from my mind. It was about five minutes later that I heard a knock on my door.
It had better not be any of my brothers, I thought.
I really was not in the mood to see them. As far as I knew, they hadn't even done anything to make Hannah see sense.
It wasn't any of my brothers at the door. Or Hannah as a small part of me had hoped. It was Sophie, holding two glasses and a bottle of wine. If Hannah could see her now, she would no doubt jump to the ridiculous conclusions she had been jumping into lately.
"Sophie," I said, darting a look over her shoulder. "What are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here."
"Why?" she asked. "Beause of Hannah? I thought we were friends." She raised the glasses she was holding. "You look like you can use some company. I was told the wine is good. It will be a shame to drink it all by myself."
I schooled my expression. Or tried to anyway. Was it that obvious I was so unhappy?
"So... can I come in?" Sophie asked.
I hesitated but it was only for a moment. Sophie hadn't done anything wrong. She had not made any advances towards me. All she had done since coming was to be friendly. Also Hannah was still busy with my brothers. Why did I have to stay in my room sulking when she was having fun?
I threw the door open, stepped back. Sophie's grin widened.
"Nice room," she said, looking around and stopping to thumb through the pile of magazines on the table.
"Thanks," I said.
She sat on the bed, poured out the wine carefully so it wouldn't soil the sheets and handed me a glass. I wanted to swallow the whole thing in one gulp. Instead I forced myself to take small sips.
"I haven't really had anything to do all day," Sophie complained. "I was getting bored out of my mind. I decided to find you and chat at a little."
"I wish I had only boredom to cope with," I said. "My mate abandoned me. Imagine that."
Sophie frowned. "About that... I suppose it's partly my fault. I'm sorry. I think Hannah just doesn't like seeing me around you for some reason. I tried, really tried several times to explain to her that we're just old friends and that she doesn't have anything to worry about." She absently rubbed the fading bruise on her cheek. "But each time I try, she attacks me. She won't even listen to anything I say."
I let out a dry chuckle.
"Yes, she does have a temper," I admitted. "But that's what makes her so cute.*
Sophie chuckled. "I guess I can understand the fascination. It's attractive when a woman is fierce. Sometimes."
I looked at Sophie admiringly. She didn't have a bad word to say about Hannah despite Hannah's open hostility. I wished Hannah would be a little more forgiving like Sophie was.
Sometimes, Sophie had said.
I hadn't missed the significance of that word.
I did like the fierce version of Hannah but these days, she was like a bomb waiting to explode. She didn't even need anything to set her off. It was makiny me very concerned.
"Drink?" Sophie urged, eyeing my glass.
I looked at it, found it was still almost full.
"Tell me," I said after taking a few more sips. "The other day when you spoke to Hannah, did she tell you why she's so upset and won't talk to me?"
