Chapter 074

HANNAH

Willa and I got to the admins office as soon as we could but not fast enough. A queue extended from the admin's office down to the hallway.

"Looks like every girl in the school is here," Willa remarked with a sigh.

"Maybe we should have come sooner," I remarked, feeling irritated by the number of people present.

"I don't think that would have helped. I think some people skipped classes just to be here."

I sighed. "Yeah, I guess. Maybe I should come back tomorrow..."

Willa did not let me finish the thought. She grabbed my arm.

"No way, Hannah," she said. "You're registering today. Tomorrow you might decide to chicken out."

I could have told her that with Julia in the picture there was no chance of that but I didn't. I quickly got into line just as another group of about ten students approached.

Willa stood beside me, chatting happily about our last class. She had told me she wasn't interested in entering the competition.

"With three brothers, I'm not really good at some girl stuff," she had said.

Suddenly, she stiffened and looked down the corridor. It was Julia, coming with her friends.

Instead of getting in line like everybody else, she walked straight to the front, her friends trailing behind her like a swarm of flies.

No one said anything. No one looked like they were about to.

The students in line were all muttering among themselves, obviously too afraid of Julia.

"Are you freaking kidding me?" I said loud enough for everyone to hear.

The mutterings stopped. Most people looked in my direction.

"I'm behind you," I said to the girl in front of me.

She nodded. I marched up to Julia, tapped her on her shoulder, hard enough to hurt.

"What the-" she began, her eyes widening in surprise when she turned around and saw me. "What are you doing here? And how dare you lay your filthy hands on me?"

"At least they're hands." I looked at her hands. Both, even the one with the bandage, were fixed and long and painted pink. "Yours are claws."

Her stupid followers gasped.

"What did you just say to me?" Julia asked angrily.

"You just came," I pointed out. "Go to the back. It's called a queue for a reason."

"If you think you can stop me from doing whatever I want, you must be out of your mind. If you want to be at the back of the line with the other losers, that's your business. Now get lost, Hannah. I have a pageant to register for."

Julia turned her back on me, started to rummage in her backpack for a pen. I knocked it out of her hand. With her teeth bared, she spun around.

"Go to the back of the line with your stupid friends," I barked. "If you don't, I'll break your other arm and throw in a black eye."

"You bitch!" Julia hissed, her eyes blazing with hatred. "You think you're tough, huh? You don't know who you're talking to. You don't-"

I broke in. "Oh shut up! Who do you think you are anyway? You think you're better than the rest of them who have been waiting here?" I jerked a thumb behind me. "Move!"

"Yeah, go back Julia," someone called out.

Julia glared at the girl.

"I'll deal with you later," Julia threatened.

"Are you going to deal with all of us then?" another girl asked. “Go back!”

Other students joined in and soon everyone was telling Julia and her clique to leave. Willa was standing at the back, looking on at the scene in surprise. She hurried over to me.

I grinned at Julia. "You heard them. Now beat it!"

Julia planted her feet firmly apart, crossed her arms over her chest.

"Make me," she said.

"You heard her, girls," I said loudly. "Let's get her out."

There was a surge move forward. Julia was pushed out of the line. When she saw screaming and cursing wouldn't get her anywhere and that she was in real danger of being knocked down, she quickly got out of the way.

"I know all your faces," Julia said, looking around, her voice choked with hate. "You have all forgotten what I can do but I promise that you will all regret this. I'll start with you." She glared at the girl who had first spoken.

"You can't do anything, Julia," I said. "No one here gives a crap about who you are. When you're done yapping, go to the back of the line except you don't want to register for the pageant. And take your puppets with you."

One of Julia's friends started to say something. She stopped at the look on my face.

Julia was silent for a moment, then muttering angrily to herself, she stomped over to the back of the line.
