Chapter 163
HANNAH
I thought the cold war would not be a serious one, that people would begin to ask the right questions and eventually realise that the rumours Dawson's pack had been spreading about Ice stone were all lies.
I was wrong.
There were several stories flying about now. Stories that painted Ice stone in a bad light. Stories that had set people at each other's throats. Literally.
These days, I was living in a mad world.
I knew things had taken a turn for the worse when Alpha Wallace had announced over a tense breakfast table on which none of us had managed to eat anything that he was reaching out to allies.
"Dawson is doing the same thing," he had said, looking more worried than I had ever seen him. "It makes sense for us to do the same. We can't afford to let the war begin without backup." And in a much lower tone of voice he had said half to himself, "Who knows when the real attacks will start?"
And so here I was, dressed in one of my best clothes Willa had picked out for me, standing in the hall, waiting until it was time to welcome Ice stone's allies who would be arriving today.
Quite a lot of them were expected. It was a lucky thing the Wallace's mansion was vast enough to accommodate everyone and even more.
"Are you ready?"
I turned. Chase was coming to me. He held out his hand. I noticed he too had cleaned up nicely.
I took his hand. Together we went outside to the large courtyard. Cade and Jace were waiting at the water fountain in the shape of a massive wolf. It was the spot where most of the cars would have to stop and let out their important passengers.
We didn't have long to wait. The first car came, coming smoothly to a stop near the fountain. Behind it were a lot of others; sleek, expensive looking. The door of the first car didn't open until all the others following it stopped also.
Then at the same time, the doors opened. Men, tall and broad and dangerous looking stepped out followed by men and women who by the way they carried themselves, were important people in the pack they represented.
Cade sidled close to me, bent his head to whisper in my ear. "The first car... the woman is the Luna of Ironclaw pack. They are our nearest neighbours."
The woman, tall and willowy, with her hair cropped very short, nodded at us and went off inside the house, closely followed by her guards flanking her on each side.
"The tall man is the Alpha of Silverfang pack." The man Cade was referring to was very tall, very broad with wild wavy hair that ran down his back. His retinue of guards looked as fierce as he did. They didn't even bother flanking him like the guards of Ironclaw had. "He's one of my dad's closest friends. He'll definitely fight with us. That's one on our side at least."
I listened closely to Cade's commentary. Since I had caused the war in a manner of speaking, these people would probably want to speak to me at a point. I wanted to know enough about them to address them properly.
"Cade!" a voice called excitedly.
I nodded and curtseyed to the Alpha of Dark ridge, then quickly turned.
A girl had climbed out of one of the cars at the very back of the line of vehicles. She was obviously the one who had called out because she was waving at us excitedly.
Well not at us. She seemed to have eyes only for Cade.
She was about my age and pretty. Dressed in very tight shorts and a blouse that hugged her curvy figure, she looked like she had just stepped off the runway. She had ample hips and she knew it so she didn't just walk. She sashayed over to us.
Who was she? I wondered.
"Oh Cade!" she exclaimed and promptly threw her arms around him. She hugged him tightly. Cade bore it but didn't hug her back.
She pulled away slightly to say, "Look at you. You look so good, better than I remember. How long has it been? Oh I missed you. I missed you."
She covered Cade's face with kisses.
I found that I didn't like this girl after all. I dug my feet into my sandals so I didn't give in to the impulse to rip her off Cade.
This time, Cade pulled away. Her blood red lipstick had left marks all over his face. He took his handkerchief out of his pocket and rubbed at the spots she had kissed.
Cade cleared his throat.
"What are you doing here?" he asked her.
