Chapter 133
ASHER
There was a loud ringing in my ears that almost drowned out everything else. I could barely hear him. He pulled me close to him and slammed me back against the wall, sending a bright flare of pain down my spine.
Hot tears leaked out from the corners of my eyes. I was helpless to stop them. Through a rapidly swelling eye, I saw my father's face twisted in disgust. He spat on the floor.
"You're a fucking bastard," he said. "You hear me? A bastard!"
I flinched as he raised his fists again. I supposed at this point, I was supposed to hit him back and defend myself, but my arms felt like slabs of iron at my sides. I couldn't even raise them.
"I'm sorry," I cried, not even knowing what I was apologizing for. I could barely recognise my voice. It sounded like I was talking through a bowl of soup. "Please... Whatever it is I did, I'm sorry."
More tears fell. My body shook with weak sobs that sent stabs of pain through me.
A bubble of snot bloomed in my nostrils. The sight of it did what all my begging had not been able to do. Slowly, the madness left his eyes. He abruptly let go of me. I grabbed a chair to stop myself from falling.
He jabbed a finger at me. "It's all your fault! It's your fault none of my plans against that bitch, Hannah, has ever worked. You go to tell her everything. Everything!"
I stared. Was this about Hannah?
I shook my head, then wished I hadn't when a bolt of pain shot through my skull.
"I didn't," I protested, watching him pace the room, scattering everything in his path. "I've never told Hannah anything! Why would I? I want her dead as much as you do."
"You didn't?"
"I would never-"
"15 days... Does that sound familiar?"
My head dropped on my chest. I remembered now. I had been so pained, so angry at how she kept acting like there would be no repercussions after she had murdered Julia. I had wanted Hannah to tick the days off her calendar, dreading the attack, wondering when it would happen... how it would happen.
I had wanted her to suffer as I had suffered before death finally put an end to her suffering.
Steel fingers gripped my jaw, forcing my head upwards.
"Look at me, boy!" my father ordered. I noticed for the first time that his teeth were stained with blood. "I swear by the goddess, if your mother were still alive, I would punish her for giving birth to a disgrace like you. I would have punished her and made you watch."
I swallowed. It hurt too much.
"I- I'll fix it," I stammered.
"How?" His eyes suddenly bugged out. I flinched, expecting another blow. "How the hell would you fix this?" He roared, then pushed his damp hair from his forehead, and I gasped. Branded into the skin in bloody streaks was a big letter 'B'.
Did Hannah do that?
I wasn't even aware I was crying again.
"I'm sorry, Dad," I said.
He turned away like he couldn't bear for me to look at him a second longer.
"Don't," he said. "Don't call me your father until you bring me Hannah Baker's head, until you wipe out her entire family. Until you do that, you cease to be my son."
******
I grabbed a towel and tried to scrub off the blood on my face. In front of me was the mirror, but I couldn't bear to look at my face.
My father's words echoed in my head. He had meant every word he said about disowning me, and it was all because of that bitch.
Hannah.
The thought of her sent the blood rushing through my head. She had snitched on me, mutilated my father, and given him a mark that would never fade. Never.
How would he face the council, the pack with that abomination carved onto his forehead?
My next move was clear as day. I would kill Hannah myself, hopefully with my bare hands. My face would be the last thing she would see. I didn't even give a damn about her white wolf blood anymore. I just wanted her gone.
I snatched up my phone and called her, the one who would help me end Hannah. She picked up at the first ring.
"Hello Asher," she said. "I-"
"How far are we progressing with our plans?" I cut in.
"The plan is working like a charm," she replied.
I grunted. "I need specifics."
"I'm slowly winning her over. I think she trusts me now. Everything is happening like you said it would."
"Fine," I said. "Take care, and make sure you don't fuck it up. Everything depends on you now."
"I won't fail you," she said.
