Chapter 254

WILLA

My head ached quite badly. The glass of fruit juice I had just finished had helped but not much.

This was the kind of morning where you sat in bed wondering why on earth you or anyone else bothered with alcohol when it made you eventually feel like something the cat dragged in.

What I wanted to do was lay in bed all morning with a cool cloth over my face. But there was something else I had to do first. Something I had been putting off for days now.

I got my phone from my bedside table, wincing at the bolts of pain that shot into my skull anytime I moved too quickly. I dialled Hannah's number.

She sounded a little out of breath when she picked it up and nearly screeched "Willa!"

Just the sound of the familiar loved voice made me smile. It felt like a huge load had been rolled off my shoulders. I settled back against the pillows.

"Hello? Willa. Are you there?"

"Well, if I'm not then someone else is wearing my clothes," I said.

Hannah laughed. "Oh how I've missed you."

"I've missed you too, Hannah," I said with feeling. "You don't know how much."

"You said you would call! What took you so long?"

*Well... I've been er- settling in, I guess. College is a whole other world."

"I know it is." Hannah paused to draw in a breath.

"Training?"

"No. I was already out of my room and then I heard the phone say it was you calling. I ran back to answer it. Can you blame me? I've been dying to talk to you."

She sounded a little grumpy now. I knew what she wanted.

"I'm sorry, Hannah," I said. "I promise I'll call and text more often, okay?"

That made her happy. She had a thousand questions, about how well I was settling in, about Worchmount, about the students, about my lectures and the professors.

I told her everything, leaving out the part about me mostly being a sort of outcast here. The last thing I wanted was for her and my brothers to worry about me especially when there was really nothing they could do to change things here.

"So everything is going well?" she asked.

"Everything's perfect," I lied. Because Hannah and I were so close I had to be extra convincing so she wouldn't catch me in a lie, I added, "I couldn't have hoped for a better start to college."

"That's great," Hannah said and sighed. "I wish we could talk all day. Still have a million other questions but I'm sure you have a lot to do over there. I guess I'll have to give the phone to your brothers. But promise me, when you have time you'll call back. Then we will really spend time talking. Girl talk. Promise me."

"I promise," I said with a laugh.

Gosh! It felt good to laugh. I even felt some of the headache easing off already.

"Hold on," Hannah said.

From her end, I heard a door open, then close. I heard Hannah's low breathing as she walked.

Then faintly, I heard her say, "It's Willa on the phone."

"Willa?" three nearly identical voices asked.

There was the sound of a brief scuffle. I grinned, thinking how some things would never change. My brothers were Alphas but apparently not above fighting for who was to get the phone first.

A second later I heard Cade's quiet voice in my ear. "Hello Willa. You've been a stranger."

I told him almost the same thing I told Hannah, about having a lot to do and settling in.

"Pass that on to the others, will you?" I said. "I'm kind of tired repeating myself first to Hannah and now to you."

Cade chuckled. "Same old sharp tongued Willa."

I grinned. "You bet, big bro."

"How are your classes-"

That was as far as Cade got before Jace plucked the phone out of his hands.

I heard Cade shout "Hey! Give that back! I wasn't done talking to her.*

"Just because you're Alpha doesn't mean you get to hog the phone, brother," Jace said.

Chase laughed.

"Hear hear," he said.

"Can you three behave?" Hannah sighed.

"No we can't," Jace said and to me, "Hello squirt. How are you?"

"I'm in college now,* I said, rolling my eyes. "I'm not a squirt anymore."

"Still my baby sister so technically you are."

I was about to answer when Chase's voice was in my ear saying, "Made any friends yet? Anyone bothering you?"

After that it was chaos as the phone kept switching hands so fast it was hard to keep up with who was speaking. I was laughing so hard when someone- Hannah- shouted for the call to be put on speakerphone so everyone could hear me.
