Chapter 170

HANNAH

Sophie continued. "I told him I thought the powers of the white wolf were wasted on you. He agreed at once. You love using your powers to hurt people and then you go around playing the victim-"

"Shut up!" I threatened.

"Cade warned me to stay away from you so I wouldn't get hurt. I'm sure if not for the stupid mate bond, he would have had you thrown out of here."

"Go and try your out your manipulative skills on someone else," I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. And a part of me, growing larger by the second, kept asking if Cade had really said these hurtful things about me. "They won't work on me."

She twisted the knife in even further. "That's not all. He told me he would make sure you didn't hurt me, that he would protect me from you, a psycho."

It was then the last thread of my self control snapped. The rage burned like hot liquid metal on my tongue. I let it burn.

It was at the last moment Sophie realized she had pushed me too far. She started to back away.

One shove and I had her flat on her back. She lay gasping, with the wind knocked out of her.

As tiny pinpricks of pain shot through the pads of my fingers, my claws, long, sharp and gleaming in the overhead lights, sprang out. My lips peeled back from my teeth. A growl slipped out.

"Let's see him protect you now, bitch," I snarled.

I raised a hand to slash at her face. Someone shouted my name. I stopped, my claws inches away from Sophie's tear streaked face.

"Hannah!" Cade shouted again. He was running towards us. "Stop. Please stop! Don't hurt her!"

Don't hurt her? He was concerned about his pretty girlfriend then.

I decided then that I would hurt her. Fuck the consequences!

Sophie had come out of her shocked daze and had begun to struggle. I pressed her to the ground with one hand.

I grinned at her. "How about I give you a little permanent scar. Huh?"

She gulped, shook her head. Her lips were turning blue.

Cade arms wrapped around my midsection and pulled me off her.

"Stop it for heaven's sake," he shouted. "Stop it! Control yourself!"

I twisted around in his grip and pushed him. It took a lot of pushing before I could finally break his tight hold.

I hated that I was crying but I couldn't help it. It hurt to know that Cade thought I was a monster.

On the floor, Sophie was struggling to breathe. Cade looked at her in concern. I stomped off.

"Wait. Hannah," Cade called after me.

He ran after me, still calling my name. I spun around so fast I nearly collided with him.

"Leave me alone!" I yelled. "Stop acting like you give a damn about me. Go to Sophie. That's who you've chosen anyway."

Cade stared. His mouth fell open.

"What are you talking about?" he said, but I was already walking away.

This time, he did not come after me.

************

Chase, Cade, Jace and I were seated around a table. I had taken pains to make sure that I was sitting between Jace and Chase. The less contact there was between me and Cade, the better for both of us.

About a few minutes ago, Alpha Wallace had left for a meeting with some of his council members. I guessed it was probably something to do with the war but he hadn't actually said so.

He had left his sons and I to attend to some important and urgent pack business.

Jace was saying, "We have to check out the disturbance some members of the pack complained about."

I agreed. We suspected that the pack causing these disturbances was Breakstone. The disturbances, especially at the pack's borders, were not really that significant but it was gradually becoming a pain in the ass. Those behind it were probably testing our defenses before the all out war began.

"We have to question those bringing in the reports too," Chase said. "There could be something important we have missed so far."

"Of course," Jace said.

I shifted in my chair. "It's settled then. We do it today. Jace, Chase and I will handle the interrogations."

Cade blinked. "What am I supposed to do?"

"I don't care," I said coldly. "Do whatever you want or better still go check out the disturbances with Sophie."

"Hannah-" Cade began.

"Stop," I said. "I don't want to sit here discussing unimportant issues while the lives of the members of this pack are at stake."

I got to my feet before he could say anything else. I noticed Chase and Jace were dragging their feet.

"Chase. Jace. Let's go," I said.

We walked out, leaving Cade staring after us.
