Chapter 068

HANNAH

I stood smiling, watching him look like he was hypnotized at the drops of blood that dropped onto the tiles. His paralysis broke. Quick as a flash, he pulled another dagger, identical to Julia's, from his back pocket. He charged at me with the dagger lifted up to strike. I stepped out of his way a split second too late.

Asher's silver dagger scratched my arm. The scratch was thankfully not deep enough to poison me.

"You missed," I bit off, backing up a few paces.

He snarled, sank into a crouch. Slowly, we circled each other.

"Next time I won't," he said. His eyes narrowed angrily when I barked out a mocking laugh. "I hate you, you filthy whore! You had a near escape. If the mating ceremony had taken place, I would have made your life a living hell."

"You mean more than you already did?"

"Oh more. So much more. The things I would have done to you would have made you wish for death. I would have denied you even that pleasure. That's how much I hate you."

"I hate you more, so the feeling is quite mutual."

Suddenly he burst into laughter. "I can see that you actually think this will end in a happily ever after for you. You think being with those triplets will bring you happiness but just like your lousy father, you will meet your end."

"Don't bring my father into this!"

"Oh. It seems like I've touched a nerve. Your father was innocent but no one would believe a wretch like him, not when it was his words against us. You see, my father and I are powerful. Power will always win. It's the way the world works"

With a roar of rage, I ran at him. He dodged my first punch but was hit by the second. He managed to get in a couple of hits when I suddenly shoved him against a table. It toppled over. The knife fell out of his hand. Another shove and I had him on the ground. A metal foodflask was lying on it's side within reach. I picked it up, and just as Asher started to push me off him, I hit him over the face with it.

I did again and again until his face was bashed and bloodied. I hit him until he couldn't even lift his arms anymore

"Who's weak now? You know, when I was dying, when that poison Julia fed me was tearing me apart from the inside out, the only thing I could think of was that I would die as a weakling. I had lived my life serving people like you and your father. I never tried to do anything about the injustice I endured at your hands. All I ever did was cry and cry. When I woke up, realized I was still alive, I knew just one thing. I would never ever live my old life again. This time, I would take charge of my own life. I would get to decide who got to live and die around me. And that starts with you."

I raised the knife, aimed at his chest.

"Hannah!"

I turned. Chase was in the room.

"Hannah please drop the knife," he said. "I know he has hurt you but you're not a killer."

A tear slipped down my cheeks. Then another. I began to cry.

"No! You don't understand. He's ruined my life. He's still coming after me even when I didn't do anything to him. He doesn't deserve to live."

"I agree," Chase said softly. "But killing him won't bring you the peace you need. Hannah, listen to me. Drop the knife and let's go home."

Home.

Home sounded good. I suddenly felt to tired, so drained. I felt my shoulders sag. I let go of the knife. Chase pulled me off Asher. He cradled me against his chest. Together we left the room, leaving Asher lying there breathing weakly.

HANNAH

I sat on the bed, cross legged, staring at the blank wall in front of me.

Chase, Cade, Jace and Willa were talking, sometimes shouting all at once. On some level I was aware that they were arguing about what I had done but I wasn't listening to them. Not really. I was in my own bubble. My mind was filled with my own thoughts that there was scarcely room for anything else.

"Shut up!" Jace suddenly shouted, startling everyone to quietness, bringing me back to the here and now.

Jace looked angrily around at his siblings. "Seriously? What are we here for? To bicker like two year olds? Why the hell are we yelling?"

Cade said, "You know why. She tried to kill them, Jace. Don't act like that's not horrible."

"Horrible?" Jace looked at his brother like he had taken leave of his senses. "How can you even say that? It was Asher she tried to kill, not an innocent. You know he deserves even more than that except you're being a hypocrite-"

"Make your point without calling names," Cade warned.

"The point is-" Jace continued, almost shouting now so he could be heard over his brother. "The point is all of us here have all wished that asshole dead at one point or the other. Hell, if I were there at that cafeteria, I would have joined Hannah. I would have cut the bastard in pieces. A quick death would have been too good for him."

"You're not helping," Cade snapped. "Get out of being sentimental about this for one freaking second and think, really think about this. Do you know the consequences of what she did? You can bet your ass people are going to find out about what happened. They are going to talk."

"Then let them talk," Jace shot back. "She did nothing wrong. If the people who are going to talk can't see that Asher got what was coming to him, then they're either dumb, stupid or both. Asher and Julia have been hunting for so long now... Maybe it's time for them to be the prey."
