Chapter 261
WILLA
They would leave it there to twist the knife in further. Lucian carried me into his room, all muted grey and black decor.
He lowered me into a neatly made bed, shook his head and said, "You really are crazy for staying out that late. You must have a death wish or something."
He gave me a look like he thought I had a few of my screws loose.
That look loosened up my throat enough to murmur, "I didn't mean to stay out that late. I just went out for some fresh air... and I guess I fell asleep."
Lucian scowled but said nothing. Apparently he didn't buy my excuse.
Lucian stalked over to his closet. He pulled out the first shirt he touched and threw it at me.
"Put that on," he ordered.
For the first time I looked down at myself. My blouse was torn in many places and dirty too.
"Why are you suddenly being kind to me?" I asked Lucian.
Lucian jerked a thumb at the door. "If you're going to ask dumb questions all night then go back to your room. The door's open. No? Then put that on."
He went to sit at his reading table.
"Okay," I said in a small voice.
I started to get up, wasn't sure my legs would hold me. While sitting up on the bed, I quickly stripped, leaving only my panties and bra on.
Lucian's shirt was so big it fell to my knees when I put it on. It smelled like him.
"I'm done," I said when he still didn't turn around. Lucian said nothing. He had a book open in front of him but I was almost sure he wasn't reading it. "Since I'm sleeping in your bed, where are you going to sleep?"
"Don't concern yourself with that," he almost snapped. "Go to sleep. Also I hate noise so sleep and dream quietly."
I lay back down. My mind drifted to the horror I had almost endured.
***********
My eyes flew open. I was a little disoriented at first. Then I remembered.
I was in Lucian's room. Someone was knocking on the door.
Lucian was yawning and sitting up in the L shaped sofa he had crashed in.
"Lucian?"
Naomi's voice came floating to us from the other side of the door. My heart beat hard and fast as I looked to Lucian for direction.
Naomi would kill me if she found me here. To her, all her suspicions that I was after her boyfriend would be confirmed.
"Stay where you are," Lucian whispered. "I'll handle it."
He opened the door just enough for him to get through it. Then he shut it behind him.
"Hi babe," I heard Naomi said. This was followed by a kissing sound.
I was so keyed up I forgot to be jealous that she was kissing my mate.
"You're here early," Lucian pointed out.
"Yeah. I left some of my stuff in your room. I wanted to get them."
"I've had a rough night. I'm not even fully awake yet. Why don't you come back later for your things? If there's anything you need urgently, tell me and I'll bring it to you when I get to class."
"Why won't you let me in?" I heard Naomi say slowly.
A note of suspicion had crept into her voice.
"I told you-" Lucian began.
"Do you have someone in there?" Her voice rose. "Another girl? Are you-"
Lucian's voice cut through hers like a whiplash. "Look Noami. It's way too early for your bullshit. Kindly don't fuck up my morning."
For about a minute I heard nothing more then the door opened. Lucian backed in, turned around, shut the door and locked it.
"She's gone," he said.
I sagged against the pillows, armed sweat off my brow. For a moment there, I had imagined Naomi kicking the door open despite Lucian's efforts to stop her and finding me lying in her boyfriend's bed. Dressed in his shirt even.
How was I ever going to explain that we hadn't slept together?
I got off the bed and started to gather up my clothes.
Lucian stopped on his way back to the sofa.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm leaving," I said.
He waved impatiently at the bed. "Stay at least until Naomi leaves for lectures. Then you can return to your room."
"Okay." I sat with my feet hanging over the bed, clutching my bundle of clothes to my chest. "Umm- I haven't really thanked you for saving me last night. Thank you."
All I got in reply was a grunt as Lucian dropped into the sofa. He put his arm over his eyes, dismissing me.
I looked at him and wondered why he hadn't just lied to Naomi that no one was in his room.
