Chapter 119
HANNAH
I blinked to clear the haze in front of my eyes. Shapes and colours slowly grew clearer.
My heart gave a leap when I saw the familiar decor of my room. In that instant, everything came back in a rush. With a groan, I sat up on my bed.
Jace's name trembled on my lips. He was the last person I saw before blacking out. I needed to be sure he was okay. He shouted my name and ran over from the other side of the room immediately after he noticed I was up.
"Jace," I sighed.
"I'm here," he said softly. "It's alright. You're safe now."
My hands kept traveling up and down his arms, his face, his back. I took in every inch of him, satisfying myself that he was alright, that everything had happened just as I remembered and that I had saved him in time.
Then I relaxed and sank back into the pillows.
"Are you alright?" he asked quietly, starting an inspection of his own.
Still too shaken to talk, I nodded. The movement sent a sharp burst of pain lancing through my skull. I rubbed my forehead gently and breathed through my mouth. Slowly the pain subsided to a dull ache.
"What do you think happened to me... again?" I asked him.
"Exhaustion," he replied promptly. "Fighting those men must have drained you, and I guess your body needed to shut down for a while. But damn, Hannah, those lessons with Logan really paid off back there."
"I don't think it's anything to do with the training," I said slowly, reflecting on those horrible seconds when I thought I would lose Jace. "The last thing I remember is the man about to shoot you. Everything else is a blank. I don't remember fighting... or even moving." I paused, struggling to describe how I felt. "The next second, I just saw them lying there. Dead."
Jace's eyes were wide with surprise. He blinked a couple of times before saying, "Well, that's really.. something. Maybe it was the power of the white wolf taking over your body then because of the way you moved and fought..." He shook his head wonderingly. "I'm surprised one of those assholes even survived. Not even the strongest soldiers in our pack could move like that. You were totally badass. By the time I gathered my wits enough to step in, the fight was already over."
I stared at Jace, not really listening but still hung up on his earlier statement. "You mean one of the men survived?"
He nodded and his face tightened. "Yes. Chase and Cade are interrogating him now."
I started to swing my legs off the bed. Jace caught my arm in a gentle but firm grip. He looked at me like I had suddenly lost my mind.
"Where do you think you're going? You're supposed to be resting," He said. “Do you think you can just jump off the bed like that? Your body needs rest.”
"I can't rest now. I want to- need to see him."
Jace obviously didn't agree but he must have seen the determined look on my face because he nodded. He helped me to my feet even though I didn’t really need his help. I must have scared him when I passed out so I let him take care of me. As we left my room, my heart clenched when I remembered the others in the car with us. The others who had died.
The interrogation room and cells were in a different wing of the house. Jace pointed at a massive door as we walked towards it. I had expected to hear some crying and screaming so the quietness was unnerving. When Jace opened the door, I knew why. Long, drawn-out cries of pain reached my ears the moment the door was opened.
I looked around. Soundproof walls.
"Want to try saying that again?" Cade growled, taking a couple of steps backwards from the man he had been bending over.
I recognized the kneeling man at once. Though his face was bruised, battered, and bloody, I would know those vicious eyes anywhere. He was the one who had almost shot Jace.
I felt my fingers curl tightly around Jace's. He squeezed mine back gently, a way of letting me know that I was okay.
Cade looked down at his knuckles, decorated with spiky metal rings, then at his bloody shirt and grimaced.
"Has he said anything yet?" Jace asked.
Cade and Chase turned at the same time. Their eyes widened into identical expressions of surprise the moment they saw me.
"For Pete's sake, Jace!" Cade exploded. "What the hell are you thinking? She shouldn't be here." His tone softened a little when he glanced my way. "Hannah, you need to be in your room, resting. Go back. We will handle this."
