Chapter 278

WILLA

The second day of the field trip felt like the twentieth. I had been up since the crack of dawn, wandering the woods around our camp, trying to empty my mind of every thought.

After an hour of this, it was safe to say it wasn't working one bit. Everything about last night stood out in clear detail.

I remembered every touch. Every kiss. The way I had fallen apart in Lucian's arms.

I turned my face up to the sky, exhaled. As I watched my breath leave in a mist I wondered if last night would change anything now that Naomi was out of the picture.

Maybe Lucian would give me a chance now. He was out of excuses not to.

I was walking through a field of late blooming wildflowers when my eyes caught something. Growing close to a weathered rock was a flower with striking blue and white petals.

I immediately recognized as one of the rare flowers we were supposed to find. I went closer for a better look.

In my pocket was a list of the plants we were supposed to find which someone had left lying around. I smoothed out the paper, went on my haunches to compare the picture to the flower.

There was no doubt about it. It was the flower. Number one on the list. So far none of the others had had any luck finding it.

"Well what do you know?" I said to a bird hopping around nearby. "I actually found something."

The bird regarded me with one beady eye, twittered and took wing. Working carefully, I uprooted the flower, taking care that the roots and a little bit of soil came out with it.

Excited to hand it over to Lucian, I headed back to camp.

It was still too early to head out for sample collection so some of the other students were sitting around, talking or helping out those on kitchen duty.

A lot more of the students were still snoozing in their tents. It was a chilly morning.

I approached the group on kitchen duty.

"Where can I find Lucian?" I asked them.

"I think he's still in his tent," one of them answered without looking up from the pile of vegetables he was carefully slicing.

I poked my head through the tent, my mouth open to tell Lucian what I had found. I felt the blood leave my face at the sight before me.

Lucian was sitting with his head thrown back. His trousers were pulled down his hips.

His eyes were closed. A girl was kneeling between his spread legs.

Her head bobbed up and down as she sucked him off. Lucian raised his hips off the floor, thrust into her mouth. The girl gagged a little. Her cheeks hollowed out. She went on sucking.

"What the hell!" I gasped.

Neither Lucian or the girl gave any sign that they had heard me. The flower I was clutching fell to the floor.  opened my mouth to say something, closed it again.

I backed away slowly then turned and left. I could hear the blood pounding faster than normal in my ears. My chest suddenly felt too tight.

I told myself Lucian hadn't promised me anything. He had told me himself that I was unsuitable. If anything, Lucian had been brutally honest with me.

So why did it feel like I was breaking apart? Why did it feel like I would never be happy again? Why-

My thoughts broke up abruptly when I suddenly found myself face to face with Naomi. I found I was almost at my tent and had no memory of walking there.

She seemed to have popped out of nowhere and I had feeling she had been out here waiting for me.

Her eyes searched my face. Whatever she saw there must have made her happy because she grinned.

"Well well... If it isn't the wolf girl," she drawled. "You've finally realized it, haven't you? You've finally realized that Lucian will only use and dump you. You saw them at it, huh? Back there. Him and that little slut so desperate to spread her legs for him." She laughed. "Did you really think he was the faithful type? Thought you had finally found your prince charming. Poor little delusional Willa."

"I don't know what you're talking about," I said as convincingly as I could. "I'm not even interested in him. I'm with Theron, remember?"

"Yet you kissed Lucian yesterday," Naomi pointed out. "That screams interest louder than anything, doesn't it?"

"Whatever happened happened in the heat of the moment. It wasn't something I was ever planning on repeating." I said.

"Liar! You want him and you can't even hide it." She poked me hard in the chest, coming closer.
