Chapter 173
CADE
I walked the path I had sworn barely twenty-four hours ago not to, the path in the corridor leading to Hannah's room. With every step I took, I felt like it was the right thing to do.
I had probably overreacted. No. Scratch that.
I had overreacted.
I should have been more patient with Hannah, more understanding. Instead I had barged into her room, yelling at her and making matters worse.
Now that I had had time to think deeply about it, I realized it couldn't have been easy for Hannah having Sophie around. Hannah had been right about one thing. If it had been Edward here or any other man who maybe had admired Hannah in the past, I would sure acted the way she had.
I took the last few steps that brought me to Hannah's door. I heard voices. Sophie's voice in particular.
I frowned. What was Sophie doing in Hannah's room. Was it possible Sophie and Hannah were no longer enemies? If that was the case, it would certainly make things much easier around here.
I was wondering whether to go and come back some other time or to stay when I heard Sophie say in a cold voice I hardly recognised, "I didn't even need to do anything special to take Cade away from you. Honestly, when I got here, I was expecting to put in a lot of work but It was almost too easy. I'm not complaining though."
I felt my muscles go rigid. I blinked, wondering if I had heard correctly.
Sophie's voice sounded close, like she was right next to the door, probably standing as she talked. Careful not to make any noise, I stepped to the side so no one looking under the door could see my shadow.
"I should have known you would come to gloat."
It was Hannah's voice.
"All you do is create chaos," Hannah went on. "That's what you thrive on, isn't it?"
Sophie laughed. It was not a pleasant sound. It had something jeering and mocking in it.
"How did you know?" she said, laughing some more. "I found out chaos gives me what I want. People tend to believe me all the time no matter what I say. So tell me why wouldn't I use this... gift to my advantage."
"Get out of my room! But before you go, I'll tell you one thing. Though Cade and I may not be in good terms, both of you are never getting back together. Never. You know what that means? You told a whole bunch of lies for nothing."
"Oh it wasn't for nothing," Sophie replied coolly. "I have Cade all wrapped around my little finger. Soon we'll be a couple again or haven't you heard the saying that old flames never die?"
I reached out and clutched the doorknob, my mind racing as I thought. Sophie had been playing us all this time!
She had lied to Hannah, made her think something was going on between us. She had lied to me as well and I like a fool had believed her. Like a fool I had swallowed all her lies without even having had a proper conversation with Hannah.
Angrily, I pushed open the door, sending Sophie stumbling a few steps into the room. For an instant, her face went slack with surprise and then she smiled.
The girl was a born pretender! It had taken her just a few seconds to decide to act like nothing had happened. If I hadn't heard her, I probably would have believed whatever lies I was sure were about to come out of her mouth right now.
"Cade-" she began.
"Wipe that stupid smile off your face, Sophie," I snapped.
Sophie's sharp eyes searched my face. Apparently she didn't like what she saw there because she looked worried.
"What's wrong, Cade?" she said. "Is everything okay?"
"No, it isn't but it will soon be now that I've realized what kind of person you really are," I said. And when she still looked blank, I added, "There's no need to pretend anymore." I pointed to the door. "I've been standing out there for quite a while. I heard everything you said."
I heard Hannah sigh in relief. I didn't look at her. At least not yet. I had to deal with Sophie first. I was so angry my hands were shaking.
Sophie swallowed nervously.
"It's not what you think," she began.
"Really? So I'm deaf now?"
"Yes- I mean I didn't say that. Look, I can explain. Hannah was trying to set me against you so I said-"
"Shut up! You can't fucking lie your way out of this one. So it was you all along. No wonder all my problems with Hannah started the moment you showed up. Thank the goddess I came here when I did."
"But I told you why I came," Sophie wailed. "I came to support your pa-"
"I don't give a damn about whether you're fighting on our side during the war or not. If your pack can't make up their own damn minds about who to side with without you in the picture, then to hell with all of them! You're getting the hell out of here tomorrow and you're never to return."
Hannah laughed quietly. Sophie threw her a glare and flushed, showing her anger for the first time.
"I'm a guest. You can't throw me out," she said.
"I already have. If by morning you're still here, I swear you'll regret ever knowing me, Sophie. I'll treat you like a criminal and damn the consequences."
"You're talking to me like that because of her?" Sophie spat.
"Yes. She's worth more to me than you'll ever be!"
Sophie recoiled. Her face twisted into an angry mask. "You don't know what you're doing! You're settling for less with her. Who is she anyway? Just on Omega who doesn't deserve you. She's a nobody. All she has going on for her is that she's the white wolf. Apart from that she's nothing and that's all she'll ever be. But me on the other hand-"
"Yes you," I interrupted with a sneer. "Let's talk about you. You think you're better than her? Who are you anyway? The daughter of an Alpha's? It's pathetic because that is the only thing you have going on for you. You hold it like a shield in front of you, making sure nobody forgets it because without that, you're just like everybody else."
"Fuck you!" Sophie screamed, her eyes bulging.
I scoffed. "You wish. Get out. And you better start packing your things now. Morning's in a few hours"
Sophie stormed past me and out the door. She slammed the door so hard the pictures hanging on the wall shook.
Now it was just me and Hannah left.
I gave her a tentative smile.
"I'm sorry," I said, meeting her eyes. "I know I messed up. I could give you a lot of excuses but the truth is I had no real reason for being a prick."
The seconds ticked past and then Hannah sighed.
"I'm sorry too," she said.
"No. I should be the one apologizing. It was all me. I should have paid more attention to you when you told me you didn't like her."
I had put Hannah's initial dislike of Sophie down to the fact that she was upset Sophie and I had once had a relationship.
"Don't take all the blame, Cade," Hannah said, letting me take her hand. "There is enough of it to go round. I believed Sophie's lies even though deep down I knew you better. Listening to her made me irritational." She laughed a little. "You must have thought I was a beast when I kept attacking her. I couldn't help it. She knew just what to say to provoke me."
Having listened to their conversation, I completely understood. If I had been the one in Hannah's shoes, listening to all that poison spill out of Sophie's lips, I too would have completely lost my shit.
I tugged gently on Hannah's hand, pulling her close to me.
"It's all in the past now," I said. "These last few days without you has been hard."
"It's been hard for me too," she confessed. "I hate staying mad at you. I-"
I swallowed her next words when I tipped her head back and pressed her lips to mine. Just one taste and I was pulling her even closer. Her body was soft and warm and willing.
It had been so long. I kissed her the way a starving man devours food. Burying my fingers in her soft hair, I filled her up with my tongue. She gasped, pulled me in. Her hands wrapped around my waist.
I forgot Sophie, the quarrel, the cold war. Everything. All that mattered in that moment was my mate in my arms.
I flicked my tongue against her lips. I didn't want to stop. I couldn't stop.
And then Hannah's hands fell away. I opened my eyes and blinked, a little dazed.
Hannah grabbed my hand and dragged me away from the open window. She didn't say anything. She held my gaze, dropped to her knees in front of me.
There was something so hot about it that I felt my erection twitch in my pants. Hannah must have felt it too. The bulge in my pants was right against her chin.
Still looking right into my eyes, she pulled my trousers down, freeing my erection. As I watched, she wrapped her soft lips around my cock. And sucked.
