Chapter 334
WILLA
Turning over in bed, I yawned, stretched and opened my eyes. For the first time in the last couple of days, I had actually slept well and felt well rested.
I smiled wryly, thinking how very easy it was to take having a good night's rest for granted.
My fingers automatically crept to the necklace around my neck. I didn't think I had ever taken if off since that evening at the field with Lucian.
Somehow I found it's presence soothing, the way a child would find the presence of their favourite stuffed animal in bed soothing. The best part was that I could carry this reminder of Lucian's affection everywhere with me.
My thumb absently traced the surface of the wooden heart. It was an old thing and age had cut some lines in it's smooth carved surface. Lines I now knew every inch of.
Looking out the window as the early morning light filtered through the room, I thought of Lucian. Where he was now. What he was doing.
I closed my fingers over the pendant and imagined the feel of Lucian's hands over mine. I was a little startled when the alarm clock went off.
An hour had already passed just thinking about my mate!
With a brisk shake of my head, I sat up.
"Get a grip, Willa," I told myself as I swung my legs out of bed. "You've really got it bad."
I padded barefoot to the bathroom for a quick shower. I got dressed, turned on my computer and went to work on an essay that was due for submission soon.
I thought tiredly that these days I never seemed to run out of homework and I wasn't even done covering out for the time I had been absent in school.
Many times as I worked on the essay, I found my thoughts again drifting to Lucian.
"Time enough for that later," I told myself as I hammered away the computer's keys.
When I was halfway done, and I sat back to read what I had written so far, my eyes fell on my cell phone. I realized I hadn't touched it all morning.
Sure there would be messages waiting for me, I unlocked the phone.
"Seven messages!" I exclaimed, staring at the screen.
I scrolled quickly through the messaging app. All of the messages were from Theron. All were sent within a few minutes of each other and apart from one, all were voice messages.
Apart from the messages, there were a truckload of missed calls. Also from Theron. Thank goodness I had turned off the phone's volume else I probably wouldn't have gotten any sleep.
I figured he had been calling and messaging to apologize.
I played the first voice note. It was an apology like I had predicted.
In the second one, he sounded really pissed.
'I just saw the blog post on that stupid campus gossip site," he had said. "Whoever wrote that rubbish about you has gone too far this time...'
The voice note ended with Theron swearing under his breath. The next voice message came on.
'Listen, Willa. Don't worry about it. I promise you they'll pay for this. Right now I'm working on finding out who wrote that trash. Shouldn't be hard to trace. I've got contacts.'
He sent another voice note asking me how I was and would I pick up my calls? He was worried sick about me.
I played through all the messages and sighed.
Theron, being keen on finding out who this anonymous blogger was annoying because I had not asked him to. It would have been nice if he had asked me what I planned to do about the post first before interfering.
It was my problem after all and my problem was mine to fix.
He hadn't been able to promise to do the one thing that would bring back our friendship. Did he really imagine he could ignore my conditions and worm his way back into my life through finding out who was defaming me?
I shook my head. I certainly was not going to let him off the hook that easily.
I dialled Theron's number. It had hardly rung before he picked up.
"Willa," he said, sounding very relieved. "I've been calling and calling." He paused. "How are you holding up... really?"
"I listened to your voice messages," I said, going straight to the point.
"I meant everything I said. I'm going to find out who wrote that stuff about you, then I'm going to go about shutting fucking blog, something someone should have done ages ago-"
"Theron-"
"I'll report to the student council if that's what it takes or I'll find a way to hack into the site-
"Theron?"
"They can't go on writing unverified shit about anyone just because-"
"THERON!" I shouted.
