Chapter 017-2

She was my arch-enemy, my nemesis, my adversary or whatever you can call someone who despises you. And I think I hated her more.

"Since when did they let in thieves in this mall?" She spat, eyeing me with utter disdain, and I couldn't help but shudder from the hate. "I'm asking again, what are you doing here?"

It took me a moment to find my tongue, and I swallowed. "What do people do in a shopping mall? And since when did you become the mall police?"

The look of shock on her face told me she didn't expect my response. She opened her mouth briefly, then shut it, then again and again. "How…How dare you talk to me like that?"

I scoffed. "You talked to me first, remember?"

Her eyes flashed angrily, and her minions hissed loudly. "I can see you're becoming pretty confident. Does that have anything to do with your new pets?"

I decided right there and then that the conversation was over. I clutched my purse, took the earrings and made to pass them.

She grabbed me by my shoulder and spun me around to face her. "I hope you know what you're doing because you'll regret it soon. I will be Luna, and no one will ruin it for me."

"You must be really delusional to think that I want Asher," I retorted, then pushed her away. "You can have him, and I hope you keep him as far away from me as possible."

"You stay away from him!" she cried. "Ever since you came into the picture, you've tried to ruin our relationship. I don't know what he sees in you. You're nothing compared to me!"

Maybe she was right. I was nothing compared to her, but I wouldn't stand there and let her walk over me. Her outburst had already drawn a circle of observers who were desperate for any bit of gossip.

"Maybe Asher—" I started to say something but stopped. I fought the urge to tell her that Asher no longer wanted her but me instead, even though it was for a sick, twisted reason. "Just leave me alone, Julia."

She did the opposite. She took steps toward me, her heels clinking against the marble floor. When she reached me, she held my shoulders, smiled slowly, then coughed up and spat on my face. "That's what you get for trying to be a bitch."

Well, that was new.

I stood rooted to the spot, feeling her saliva slowly sliding down my nose. Either disgust or shock immobilized me, and I could only watch her smile and take a step back with satisfaction. I never thought she could get so cruel, so irritating, so nightmarish.

Her minions started sniggering, and she bowed dramatically. "It sucks to be you, Hannah. It really does," she tsked. "There's nothing more pathetic than a dirty blood who doesn't know her place."

DIRTY BLOOD.

That was the forbidden word for omegas. Many years ago, it was used to describe people like me—wolves that were too weak to be regarded as true wolves but too strong to be humans. It was a cruel way of calling us useless and hearing it from Julia made it even worse.

Tears burned my eyes but out of anger. I clenched my fist beside me, feeling a surge of fury coursing through my veins, and every muscle in my body tensed.

As I stepped forward, a hand fell on my shoulder from behind me, and I turned to see Willa shaking her head. I hadn't even noticed when she came up behind me.

"She's not worth it," she said, peering into my eyes. "Come on, let's go."

I didn't want to leave. I needed to punch Julia, to slam her head against the cold floor and watch blood drain from her head.

But Willa was right. The moment I touched her, the entire council of elders at the pack would come after me. It would not be difficult to pass judgment since the Bakers were quite notorious for violence. They would say my father had implanted his treacherous notion in my head, and I was desperate to execute it.

I sighed, pulled a handkerchief from my purse and wiped my face. Before I walked away with Willa, I made sure to give Julia a dirty look, one that told her that I would kill her if I got the chance.

"That's right. Leave and never come back here!" she yelled after us. "Go away, dirty blood!"

At the checkout counter, I fumed. No matter how hard I tried to avoid trouble, it would always find me. I could barely hear what Willa was saying, but I shook my head when she asked if I wanted to continue shopping. Julia had ruined everything just like she always did.

Willa paid for the earrings I picked even though I'd lost interest in ever wearing them. I was only eager to leave the mall so Julia's insults would stop replaying in my head.

After our items were packaged, we strode toward the exit. Just as we were about to leave, the alarm from the surveillance system started to beep loudly. I jumped, my heart racing as I glanced around in shock.

"What's happening?" Before I could understand what was happening, several security personnel surrounded us.

"Freeze!"
