Chapter 147

HANNAH

Even though my mates didn't seem to think Willa's note was connected, I held it at the back of my mind.

"The next step is to get Father to cancel the ball. It can't possibly hold now after what happened," Jace said.

The drive back to the pack was quiet and sombre. Each of us was lost in our own thoughts.

Alpha Wallace was sitting alone in the meeting room. He sat up quickly when his sons and I walked through the door.

Jace went straight to the point. "Dad, we don't think the Ice stone ball should hold now."

Chase nodded. "If Willa could get poisoned despite all our security, and it's just us and the guards in the house, hosting the ball is like courting disaster. There will definitely be an attack. Whoever did this will try again."

Cade added, "We'll start sending out notices that the ball has been postponed if it's okay by you."

"No, it's not," the Alpha said quietly.

My mates and I stared at him, doubting we had heard correctly. I didn't think he would even let us bring it up before doing the right thing.

"What?" Jace said, voicing our thoughts. "You really can't mean-"

"The ball can't be cancelled."

Chase gasped. "But Willa-"

Alpha Wallace broke in. "I'm well aware of all your concerns and I share them. But the ball must hold as scheduled. The invitations have been sent already. I personally have invited many Alphas. Powerful ones from all around the territory. How would we as a pack hold up our heads if we cancelled the ball because of such a... little incident?"

"Small?" Chase asked, sounding as outraged as I felt. "You call my sister almost getting killed an incident?"

"Willa is my daughter too," Alpha Wallace said. "Don't you forget that. I care for her as much as you all do, maybe even more. And she is not going to die. She's merely unconscious and the doctors have assured us she will come around soon enough." He gave me an apologetic look. "I am sorry, but the ball has to hold."

Cade, cursing and muttering angrily was the first out the door.

Jace, looking fit to burst faced his father. "Look, Dad. You want to save face. I totally understand that. You put me in charge of security, right?"

"Yes. That still holds. Whatever plans you have for security, beef it up. Spare no expense. Engage as many men as you need-"

"Yes. Yes," Jace cut in impatiently. "That was not where I was going. I was about to say that as head of security, I think going ahead with this is a disaster waiting to happen."

Chase supported his brother and tried to change his mind, but Alpha Wallace was unshakable in his decision—the Ice stone ball would hold. He had gone too far to back at now and would his sons see to the preparations instead of standing there arguing with him?

I stalked off.

There was no point staying there anymore. If Alpha Wallace's sons couldn't convince him to see sense, then there was nothing I could do.

I heard Chase call my name. I pretended I didn't hear and kept going, struggling to keep my anger in check.

I supposed my mate's father felt like he was doing what was right for the pack, but Alphas could be so damn stubborn! Too stubborn for their own good!

What if the culprit came back to finish Willa off? Had he thought of that? Did he think she would be lucky the second time?

I abruptly found myself standing in the corridor facing the room where Willa was being treated. I forced myself to open the door, to go in.

There she was, lying on the big bed, very still and silent. Only the periodic rise and fall of her chest indicated that she was still alive, still breathing. The poison had made her as pale as the white sheets someone had draped over her body.

Seeing her like that sent stabbing pain through my heart. With a jerky stumbling walk, I closed the distance between us. I started to sit on the chair beside her bed but fell to my knees instead.

"Please. Please..." I sobbed.

The rest of the words wouldn't come but from the recesses of my soul, I offered up a prayer to the moon goddess to bring Willa back from wherever the conscious part of her had gone.

Nothing bad could happen to her. I knew I wouldn't be able to take it. In a heartbeat, I would volunteer to take her place.

A short, intense burst of anger had me clenching my fists as I pictured whoever had done this. I made a promise to myself then and it didn't matter to me if Willa's father was not taking her safety as seriously as he should.

I would find the culprits and I would end them.
