Chapter 199

HANNAH

"Then yes. Of course I'll go with you."

A quick peck on the cheek followed and then Cade's dark eyes grew serious.

"Chase told me about your dream this morning," he said. His eyes searched my face. With a finger, he smoothed away the frown line he found there. "You don't have to worry, Hannah."

I exhaled. "Yeah. That's what Chase and Willa said."

"And they're right. I'm telling you the same thing."

"I'll be going on a camping trip with Chase," I said to change the topic.

"Ah. I almost forgot he was due for one of those."

"I've never been on one of those before," I said. "What am I supposed to expect?"

"Don't be nervous-"

I rolled my eyes. "I'm not nervous. I just want to get the feel of the whole thing."

Cade fell back on my bed. He placed his hands behind his head. I lay beside him.

Deliberately putting on the air of a tour guide he said, "It's basically just a day or two or three days in the great outdoors. It's fun. The best part is there might be really no teacher coming along to supervise things. So it's just the students. Chase will be the team lead."

"Cool," I said.

He gave me a quick sideways glance and another grin. "Why is it 'cool'? Are you planning a repeat of the art club party so soon?"

"What if I am? Go on."

"That's basically it... collecting samples for a school project. When the students are not doing that, they can play some games and have fun. Might be a little inconvenient for some people though, camping out in the woods without the thousand different conveniences that technology brings but..." He turned on his side our faces were inches from each other. "I'm not worried about you. You'll be a natural at camping. I can help you get you some camping gear if you want."

"No need. I think Chase said something about getting them for me already. I actually can't wait. It'll be nice to get out of the house if only for a little while."

His hands caressed my face. "I know how that feels and don't you worry. Chase will certainly take care of you out there."

Hand in hand I walked with Cade to the movie theatre. The night was cool and windy. Couples holding hands and singles too were heading for the cinema.

"That one."

Cade was pointing at the glass window or the theatre. A poster took up an entire window. It was one of a good looking blonde in a leather jacket, trousers and boots behind the wheels of a race car.

"That's the movie we're going to see," Cade continued. "Heard good reviews about it. It's supposed to be good."

"Let me guess. It's about a very pretty, very cool badass girl racing," I said.

"Ha ha. Very funny. You can't actually guess what a movie is about just from the poster, you know?"

"No. But I can try."

I linked my arm through his. We kept walking. The movie was premiering that evening. The cinema had put out a red carpet with another poster of the movie as a backdrop. People were taking pictures and making videos there.

Cade was looking that way.

"Do you want to-" he began.

"No," I said.

"Me neither."

I spotted the popcorn stand. "Let's get some popcorn. Can we?"

Cade checked his watch. "Sure. We have time. The movie doesn't start for fifteen minutes."

The girl selling the popcorn did a double take when she saw Cade.

"Two popcorns please," he said. "Extra large."

The girl swallowed nervously and got right to it, colour blooming in both her cheeks.

I was sort of used to that by now. Girla getting all flustered when they saw my mates. They were all quite good looking after all. Or maybe it was because Cade was Wallace's son.

Since Wallace had become Alpha of both packs, he had been in the news a lot. It was-

My thoughts broke off as I became aware that the hairs of the back of my neck were standing on end.

Someone was watching me. It was the sort of steady concentrated stare your instincts warned you about.

I whirled around suddenly, hoping to catch the person unawares. There was no one there. No one paying attention to us.

Still the feeling remained, slowly fading away as though the watcher had just hidden at the instant I had turned.

Vaguely I registered Cade asking me if I was okay. If there was anything wrong.

"I'm fine," I said, wondering if maybe my imagination had been playing tricks on me.

No, I thought to myself. Someone had been watching me. I was sure of that.
