Chapter 168
HANNAH
"Whatever we had is long gone. How many times am I going to say it before you get it?" Cade explained.
"Tell that to someone stupid enough to believe you," I shouted back.
He started to say something else. I clapped my hands over my ears and rushed out of the room.
Why had I even gone to confront him anyway? I should have known he would only lie. I threw open the door of Jace's room. Chase was there too.
"I hate him," I said, throwing myself on the bed and burying my face in a pillow. "I hate him so much."
"No you don't," Chase said matter of factly and came over to gently knead my shoulders.
I supposed he was right. I could never hate Cade but I was so hurt by what he had done. The thought of him and Sophie together made me feel miserable.
The mattress dipped a little as Jace sat next to me.
"I suppose you are talking about Cade, right?" Jace asked.
"I don't want to talk about it," I said, my voice a little muffled.
"Maybe. But it will help you feel better if you do," Jace said.
"Tell us what our brother did this time. I'm guessing it's about Sophie?"
I hesitated, then nodded. I told them all about my argument with Cade.
"Don't think too much about it," Chase said when I had finished. "I'll bet he's regretting all the things he said by now."
Jace agreed. "You two will make up before the day is over, I'm sure. Meanwhile don't let this get you down."
"Eaay for you to say," I grumbled. "Cade and I can't make up when the cause of the problem is still here. He's letting Sophie come between us-"
"Cade loves you so maybe that's a bit of a stretch don't you think?" I turned on my back to give Jace a glare. He threw up his hands, mimed zipping his lips shut.
"Cade can be so stubborn sometimes but he'll come to his senses. Don't worry," Chase said. "I don't even understand what's so special about that Sophie girl anyway."
"You on the other hand..." In one fluid movement, Jace picked me up and placed me on his lap. "You're pretty special. I knew it the moment I set my eyes on you in that classroom."
"When a man complements a woman, she's expected to smile and blush," Chase said with mock seriousness. He leaned forward so he could peer into my face. "I don't see you smiling, Hannah. Being grumpy doesn't suit you, you know. Right now you look like Logan does when he's on guard duty."
Jace chuckled.
"Don't make me laugh," I said with a frown.
But I did laugh after about ten minutes of Jace and Chase teasing me. They made me feel so much better after all.
***********
A hundred different fragrances from the flowers wafted on the night air. The moon was shining high in the sky. It bathed the garden with a soft, warm glow.
It was so peaceful and serene that I found myself going further than I had intended to. I hadn't been able to sleep. Thought of the impending war and some of my quarrel with Cade had kept my mind too busy for bed which was why I was out here.
My fingers trailed over the plants. A memory, a pleasant one, came up. I remembered that magical night when Chase had lit up the garden for me. It had felt like something straight out of a movie.
Who would have thought that big, buff Chase was a helpless romantic? I felt a smile curve my lips at the thought.
I reached out to pluck a rose when I noticed a shadow behind me. I turned quickly. There was nothing there, only some shrubs whose leaves swayed in the wind. Could they have cast the shadow?
Carefully I scanned the area but saw nothing to alarm me. I shrugged, kept on walking. I was passing by the potted plants when I noticed the shadow fall over them.
I whirled around so fast I nearly fell. Still there was nothing out there. Nothing but the flowers and the night insects fluttering about.
"Hannah."
I flinched, a scream bubbling up in my throat. It was only Jace.
"You scared me," I gasped, pressing my hand against my chest.
I could feel my heart racing like a runaway engine. For a moment I could have sworn that the shadow had a human shape.
"What are you doing alone in the garden at this time of the night?" he asked.
"I needed to take a walk to clear my head."
He took my hand firmly in his. "You shouldn't be alone out here. Let's go back in."
