Chapter 308
WILLA
As the cheers from the students went on and on, Lucian's jaw was clenched so tightly it looked like it would snap into tw?
I felt miserable. Why didn't they all get to something else already?
"Smile," Theron said, speaking from the side of his mouth as his eyes darted around the room. "Everyone's watching and apparently rooting for you. For us," he corrected.
He suddenly leaned forward to kiss me. I turned my head in time so the kiss fell on my chin instead.
Theron grinned like it had been the plan all along. Some of the boys wolf whistled.
Others cheered even more loudly. The noise was deafening.
To make it worse, some students passing by came in to find out what the commotion was all about.
"Attaboy, Theron!" someone yelled.
Having no choice, I forced a smile and then realizing how stiffly I was holding myself away from my supposed boyfriend, I leaned into him a little.
Please, I prayed in my head. Please let the love bugs read out a shout-out from someone else now.
They did but not after Theron and I had gotten at least a couple of minutes more attention.
Then the girl reading out requests took out another folded sheet of paper from her bag and read out a love note from someone named Andy.
The new couple didn't get nearly enough attention as Theron and I did.
"Did you see Lucian's face?" Theron crowed, his eyes shining with excitement.
"I did," I replied, wishing I didn't.
Sienna quickly shot a look in Lucian's direction. I had to force myself not to do the same.
"He looks pretty mad," she remarked.
Theron chuckled. "Furious. Looks like he's seconds away from smashing his head against the wall." I
In a low murmur, I said I personally thought it was more likely Lucian was thinking of doing the exact same thing to Theron's head.
Theron chuckled.
"I would love to see him try," he said. "I'll take him apart with one finger." He picked up my sandwich, let it drop back into my plate. "I'm so happy I think I could actually eat this muck. Ha!"
He made kissing noises, brought his face close to mine again. I punched him in the arm. It was not a light punch.
Theron laughed and rubbed his arm.
Sienna half turned her chair away from us to talk to someone at the other table.
"You shouldn't have done that, Theron," I hissed. "This stunt you pulled was completely unnecessary. You just made things a lot more complicated."
"How?" Theron asked, spreading his hands. "I don't understand. The plan... our plan was to make Lucian jealous, right? We just did that. You should be happy and thanking me."
"I don't care if this was the plan," I snapped. I was getting angry now. Theron was not taking this seriously at all. "If you want to do something like this next time, tell me first. You just made me look like a fool in front of the whole school!"
Theron rolled his eyes at the ceiling. "Come on, Willa. You're exaggerating. Everybody thinks it's cute. The point of a shout-out like this is to surprise the one you love. It was your genuine reaction that made the whole thing much more believable. If I had told you beforehand-"
"Theron! I don't care, okay? Just don't do it again. At least not without telling me first."
I doubted I would let him do it even if he told about it first.
Theron frowned at me. He pulled thoughtfully at his chin.
Finally he said, "The Willa I knew would be happy this happened. You have really changed. Everything you've been doing lately seems to revolve around him. Maybe Lucian is getting into your head."
I wanted to ask him what the hell he meant by that but I stopped myself. I was so upset with Theron now that I knew if I said one more word we would end up quarreling.
Already there were a lot of people watching.
I took a bite out of my sandwich, chewed it, found I had lost my appetite.
For the rest of the time I spent in the cafeteria, I sat quietly, listening to Sienna and Theron talk. When they weren't talking, the love bugs were still causing a stir so I wasn't drawn into conversation.
I left early to go to my next class. As I walked I thought how amazing it was that news on campus travelled so fast.
Nearly everyone I passed kept staring at me. Some were subtle about it. Most were very obvious.
I passed a group of five in the corridor and heard one of them say something about 'Willa and Theron' under her breath. I gritted my teeth and walked on.
