Chapter 153
HANNAH'S POV
She went behind me and tugged at the chains to check if they were still fastened. When she saw that I was still chained, she nodded. Looking back at her innocent act in school, I never thought we would end up in this situation.
That she would end up being the devil that Willa warned me about. Only if I listened to her and kept my distance. I had been the one who invited Mia to the party because I considered her a friend. And what did that get me?
I didn't speak until she was standing in front of me again.
"What do you stand to gain by doing this?" I asked. "What did Asher promise you?"
I had to ask because I couldn't wrap my head around why she was doing all this. Where did she call from? And how did Asher rope her into his evil plans?
If she had willingly agreed to do this, was it all to be Luna? Did he have anything against her or her family?
"Everything," she replied. "Now let me tell you a little story, one I've told you before-" In front of my face, she held two fingers an inch apart. "—but with a tiny little variation. No big bad Alpha killed my parents and family. I did." She stopped. "You look surprised. You don't think I'm capable of that, do you? Don't blame you. I didn't know I could do something like that myself until I... well, did it." She stared down at her hands in fascinated wonder. "Staring down at the dagger in my palm and their blood drying on my hands was the most fucking powerful I had ever felt."
"You're a liar and a fucking crazy, psychotic murderer," I gasped, wanting the words to hurt. "You murdered your family, you're crazy!"
My words didn't seem to hurt her. Instead, Mia looked pleased, like I had just complimented her. It struck me then that this girl was much more of a psycho than Julia. Julia would shrink back at my words, not smile.
I couldn't ever picture Julia killing her father and looking happy about it. It seemed I had exchanged one monster in my life for another.
"Yes, I lied," she said. "But it was the right kind of lie, wouldn't you agree? My story was the kind you would relate to one about a wicked, controlling Alpha dictator that abuses his power, kills families or exiles them as it was in the case of your traitor father." She smirked coldly. "You belived me just easily because you missed your daddy."
The chains rattled as I thrust my neck forward. "Keep my father's name out of your rotten mouth!" I warned her. "You can spew rubbish out of your mouth concerning me. But keep my family out of this. Keep them out of your mouth!"
Mia ignored that. She started to walk around the room again, trailing her finger along the green, scummy walls. "Anyway, what really happened was that my stupid parents didn't want me dating Maxwell, the love of my life, because he was way older than me. They said I would marry him over their dead bodies, so I gave them their wish. Death. I don't take no for an answer, you see. When Maxwell found out what I had done, the ungrateful bastard was horrified. I saw the love in his eyes turn to hate on the spot. He looked at me like I was a monster. A monster?"
"He's not wrong," I told her. "You're more than a monster. Your parents loved you and you decided to pay them back by killing them. And your brother? What did he do to deserve death? He did nothing, but you killed him just because of a boy!"
She told to me, her eyes darkening with anger. "Love?" She asked, tilting her head. "If my parents really loved me, why would they stop me from being with the love of my life? Why would they do that?"
"Because they know better," I answered.
She scoffed. "Maxwell called me a monster for what I did." She looked around the room like there was an audience listening to her speech. "A monster?"
