WILLA

I stopped in the middle of the hallway, to take it all in.

The big grin I had been wearing ever since I drove in here made my cheekbones ache a little bit.

I was here. Finally here in Worchmount, the school of my dreams. It was grander, way better than the bazillion pictures I  had stared at on the internet had made it out to be.

I stood there and did a 360, taking in the large hallway leading up to the wall of fame where trophies, medals, and pictures awarded to Worchmount's exceptional students were kept.

I felt a little pang when I remembered how often and how long Hannah and I had talked about this place. Shame that she couldn't be here, but I would send her pictures like I had promised. Lots of them.

My grin resurfaced as I kept moving, still looking around.

"Hey Jo!" someone called from beside me and walked up to a group of students standing with their heads together and poring over a book.

With the way one of the girl's shapes kept blurring and changing, she was a shifter.

A little further ahead, standing listlessly with their backs to the wall and idly checking their watches were a couple of very pale guys. The only color they had was the bruise-colored patch of skin under their eyes.

"Vampires," I muttered.

Maybe they heard me-—vampires were known for their very acute sense of hearing-—because one looked in my direction and said something to the other, who grinned, showing teeth that were very sharp and so white they gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights.

I kept walking, taking in the werewolves, the Lycans, and other supernaturals. I came to the head of some stairs that seemed to go way, way up.

This was just one of the buildings on the university's massive grounds. There were a lot of places to explore. And I couldn't wait to get started. But first-

I pulled out my phone and checked the first day's schedule that the school had emailed me the day after I had accepted their offer of admission. The first thing on the list was going to the dean's office. The thing is, I didn't know where that was.

I turned around and saw a girl starting for the stairs.

"Dean's office, please?" I told her.

Without a word, she stabbed a finger in the direction of the corridor branching off to my right. She was gone before I could thank her. I soon came to the big door with the gold letters reading DEAN FREEMAN.

"Enter!" I heard him call out when I knocked.

The dean was a small, pudgy man seated behind a large, neatly arranged desk in an equally large office. He was fussily arranging some papers when I walked in. He stopped, looked up, and eyed me with interest.

Thinking he looked kind and friendly, I gave him a tentative smile.

"Hi," I said. "I'm supposed to come and see you first. It's my first day at Worchmount."

His interest got more pronounced. He smiled. "Ah. A new student. Welcome to Worchmount. Please take a seat."

I did and felt that bubble of excitement inside grow a little more. Dean Freeman took a bulky folder and, with a finger on the cover, said, "Name?"

"Willa Wallace," I said promptly and couldn't help smiling a little.

The Wallace name was after a key that usually unlocked a lot of doors. My father's defeat of Dawson during the duel was still talked about in the territories.

There was no recognition on the dean's face, though. He merely flipped the bulky folder all the way to the letter W.

One short finger trailed down the list of names there.

Under his breath, he murmured, "William... Wimple... Warren..." At the very bottom of the page, he stopped. "Willa Wallace?"

"That's me," I said cheerfully.

He shut the folder, looked at me again, and I noticed a surprising thing. There was no spark of interest or welcome on his face now, just an expression of boredom and an air of wanting to get this over with.

The dean handed me a slip of paper, crossed his hands over the desk, and said, "That is your class schedule. See that you stick to it. At Worchmount, we don't entertain slackers. No lectures for you today. Take the time to get settled in. You will get your room number at the student admin's office down this corridor. Last door on your right." He paused. "Also, it is my duty as dean to inform new students such as yourself who unfortunately fall into the low-ranking category that you are well..." He spread his hands. "low-ranking."

I blinked, not sure that I had heard correctly. "L-low ranking?"

His eyes grew even more bored. "Yes."

"I'm an Alpha's daughter." I said. "My brothers, three of them, are alphas of our pack."
