Chapter 011
The next morning, I slowly opened my eyes, and a small yawn followed. I grabbed the duvet that was swung over my body and pushed it aside. Then I lay in bed for some minutes, feeling too lazy to get up.
"Today will be a good day, Mace," I whispered.
Despite the awkward conversation I had with my mother last night and the silence we shared at dinner, I knew today would be better.
The first indication was that I had slept peacefully the entire night. Fortunately, Asher wasn't burying himself in Julia last night, so Mace and I were spared the usual heart-wrenching pain of betrayal.
I slowly got out of bed, stretching as I yawned again. It was my official first day as the triplet's mate, and the single thought of that made me blush. Some would say I am cliché, but they were the first real romantic experience I'd ever had.
And that meant I needed to make an effort in my appearance today. The staring and gossip would be inevitable, but I could at least try to look better than usual.
I walked to my wardrobe and stared blankly at the array of clothes. After a minute and a lengthy sigh, I decided on what to wear.
It took less than thirty minutes to prepare, and I strolled downstairs to grab breakfast. My mother had already left for work, but she left a note. I sighed as I picked it up, slightly amused that she would rather leave a note than text me.
"I WANT THE BODYGUARDS GONE TODAY. BE HOME BEFORE ME!" I read out and chuckled. She had a weird way of parenting, but she was the best.
After breakfast, I hurried to the car, where the bodyguards were already waiting for me. Like a robot, one of them snatched my bag, and the other opened the car door for me. No words were exchanged between us as they drove me to school.
The ride to school took approximately ten minutes and twelve seconds. I knew that because I was glancing at my wrist every second, too nervous to look away. The moment I had gotten into the car, my mind had been swamped with thoughts—terrible and scary thoughts that had been lying dormant, waiting to attack me.
I was terrified, and there were questions bugging me. What if the triplets changed their mind about me? It was certainly not difficult, was it?
I re-read their texts last night, and nothing seemed cold or unusual. Yet, I was restless, and anxiety was seeping into my bones.
By the time I finally made it to school, my bottom lips had been chewed mercilessly, and my palms were sweaty.
Then, the most unusual thing happened.
As I exited the car with my bag, a group of girls gossiping in the parking lot turned their attention to me. As usual, I waited for them to scrunch up their nose in disgust or eye me like I was wearing my grandmother's skirt.
None of that happened.
Instead, they started to walk toward me with a smile on their faces. I turned back, assuming there was someone behind me who was of interest to them, but there was nothing. Even the bodyguards had driven away, leaving me gaping like a fool.
"Hello, Hannah," a girl with overly-styled blonde hair purred as they approached me. I recognized her from my English class. Her name was Ellie, and she had never spoken to me before—well, besides the day she told me my cardigan looked like it was made from goat's skin.
"Umm—" I swallowed. "Hel—Hello."
One of them looked down at my skirt and gasped. "Oh my God, I love your skirt. Where did you get it?"
This was not really happening, was it? I nervously stole a glance at each of them, noting how they were actually waiting for a response.
"Umm, it's a thrift skirt," I answered and licked my lips. "Do you really like it? I mean, I've worn it twice, and no one really complimented me."
"It's niceee," Another girl with a petite stature chipped in. "Vintage. I like it." But her expression briefly betrayed her—she didn't like it. Why were they talking to me? None of these girls would pay attention to me on a typical day.
"You're like really cool," Ellie muttered and patted the petite girl beside her. "What's the word to describe someone who's really mysterious and ummmm..Conservative!" She yelled out and turned to me. "You're so conservative, Hannah."
Conservative? Did she really know what that word meant, or did she pull it out from her abnormally large and fancy purse?
I managed to force a smile even though I looked constipated the entire time. "Thank you, Ellie."
"So there's a party this weekend at my place," Ellie announced, and all of them giggled excitedly as if they had just been informed of the news. How dramatic. "You're invited."
"Really?" I asked, feigning interest and excitement. However, I was scared—terrified even—that Ellie had invited me to her party.
"Absolutely." She flicked her perfectly manicured fingers. "You should bring the Wallace brothers, too."
"Yes!!" The rest chorused, their eyes shining with excitement.
"Not that we invited you because of them." The petite girl added, and Ellie almost nudged her to the ground.
Ellie giggled and flicked her hair. "Just make sure you come. 8 pm, my place. Be there."
"Sure, I will—"
Before I finished my statement, they had already sashayed away. I watched as they flung their hips effortlessly and sighed.
There was only one reason they even spoke to me—the triplets. They obviously wanted their attention, and I would be their pawn in the plan. How ridiculous for them to believe I would fall for their fake kindness and compliments.
Sadly, a part of me wished I could have real friends.
I decided to forget about Ellie and headed straight to my locker to grab my books. As anticipated, the hallway was filled with whispers, and eyes followed me with each step I took.
'Stay focused, Hannah. They won't hurt you.' I whispered to myself, over and over, till I reached my locker.
After collecting my books quickly, I turned the corner for my first class and almost bumped into someone.
Asher.
I froze, feeling shivers running down my spine. Julia was standing behind him and her eyes flashed angrily when they met mine.
Seeing them caused a searing pain in my heart and fear that jolted through my body. The triplets were not here to save me, and Asher was a cold-hearted bastard who would take that to his advantage. Building up a little confidence, I looked away and made as if to pass them.
"Where the hell do you think you're going?" Asher growled and blocked my way with his form. "Don't you dare walk away from me!"
