Chapter 190
HANNAH
The party was already in full swing by the time we got there. Music blasted off the speakers, making my body thrum. On the dance floor were lots of people, dancing, swaying to the beat. Some completely off the beat.
Those who weren't dancing were drinking alone, drinking in groups or making out. The couple closest to me were pressed against the wall, eating each other's faces.
I turned to Jace who was looking around and grinning.
"I thought this was supposed to be a fundraising party," I shouted so I could be heard over the music.
Jace's eyes swivelled to me. "Oh no. Everyone here already donated. We have more than enough money now. Much more than we had originally planned." He spread his hands. "This right here is just an excuse to get wild."
"It certainly is wild," I said dryly looking around some more.
"Yeah. It is, isn't it?" Jace said beaming like a proud father. "The drinks here are the bomb. Wait until you try them. I personally got the best. Wait here for me, okay? I'll be right back."
Jace turned and disappeared into the crowd. The lights in here were dim. Compounded with the fact that there were a lot of people present, it would take Jace time to find me so I stayed put.
I interested myself in a group I was sure was made up of students in Jace's year. They were talking, laughing and of course, drinking. The party was supposed to be for Jace's art group but I suspected a whole lot of people who were not members were in attendance.
"Hello there," someone said from behind me.
I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. How many times in the last several hours had I hoped I wouldn't run into him again? Now he was here and looked to be on the path of being annoying. Again.
"Go away, Devin," I said.
But of course he didn't. He gently shoved a couple aside so he could come stand in front of me.
"I'm sure we keep running into each other for some reason," he said. "It's fate."
"I agree." His eyes widened in surprise and pleasure. "Maybe the moon goddess wants me to punch you in the face. Something I'm seriously considering doing right now."
Instead of getting angry like I wanted him to, he chuckled. "Nice. You have a great sense of humour and you're feisty. I like."
"It's not humour, trust me."
"Even better. You grow more fascinating by the second, Hannah." He held out his hand and for a moment I thought he wanted me to shake hands again. "How about a dance? Just one. Or two. Come on. It's my favourite song they're playing."
I folded my hands across my chest instead. "If you're really a fan as you said, you would know I have mates. Vicious ones that will rip your head off if they even suspected you were thinking of making a pass at me. So piss off!"
Devin opened his mouth to say something. Jace returned, holding two plastic cups filled with some drink.
With a smirk, I waited for the explosion I was sure would happen when Jace saw Devin. My jaw went slack with surprise when Jace smiled, actually smiled, at Devin.
"Hey, man!" Jace said, handing me a drink and slapping Devin jovially on the back. "You made it tonight."
Devin gave me a triumphant look out of the corners of his eyes. "Of course. I wouldn't have missed this for the world. The party is lit!"
Jace laughed. "Tell me about it. This is Hannah, my mate. Hannah this is Devin. He's a really cool guy."
"Nice to meet you again, Hannah," Devin said with a grin I was itching to slap away. "The Wallace's got themselves a pretty one."
While Jace looked around, Devin winked at me. I glared. His grin widened.
"How about we turn this party up?" Devin suggested.
Jace's attention snapped back to him. "Yeah? What have you got in mind?"
"Let's play some games that will still help with the fundraising."
"Oh. I thought everyone donated already."
"They did but then you can never have too my money, can you? Some people still organized truth or dare, dart tables and all that and believe me, the games are raking in the dough."
"Great then. Let's play," Jace said.
"I don't know-" I began.
Jace cut short my protests with a loud, hearty smack on the cheek.
"Come on. It will be fun," he whispered in my ear. To Devin who was watching us very closely he said, "Go on. Lead the way."
Jace took my hand. I allowed myself to be pulled along.
Over his shoulder, Devin said, "How about truth or dare?"
