Chapter 058
HANNAH
The car pulled into the school's parking lot. Cade, Chase and Have exited first, closely followed by Willa and then me.
The moment I stepped out into the morning's sunlight, my presence caused quite a stir. The students passing, talking amongst themselves about all that had happened over the weekend all stopped to stare.
"Here goes nothing," Willa murmured from beside me.
The triplets flanked us on both sides as we made our way down the parking lot, through the throng of gaping students.
"But she was with Asher just last week," I heard a girl with freckles say to her friend in a voice she didn't bother to lower.
Apparently, she wanted to be heard.
Spurred on by this, someone far back called out, "She's cheap. Dirt cheap! Anyone can have her. Just like that."
I heard the snap of a finger.
"Last week, she was with Asher, now she's with them? She's nothing but a slut."
This last sounded like one of Asher's sycophantic friends. I didn't even bother turning to check. I just walked on. I had been prepared for this sort of reception, of course. Willa and my mates had told me ignoring them was the best thing to do. I agreed.
Apparently, it's easy to be popular when people love to hate you.
I ran my fingers through my now dark hair as we entered the school's hallway. Willa had dyed it so it was back to it's natural colour now. I just hoped it wouldn't start turning white at the roots again. Or I would be trending all over school for the wrong reason. I could already imagine the headline and the dirty looks I would receive as I crossed the hallway.
I sighed, telling myself to focus on what was important. Myself.
More than anything, I wanted to see Asher and Julia. It was mostly all I had thought of all weekend. I wanted to see the look on their faces when they saw me. They thought I was dead so seeing me in the flesh was going to be a shock.
Jace, stepping forward, pushed open the door of the cafeteria. Willa gave my hand a little reassuring squeeze but I hardly even noticed.
I scanned the room, and immediately zeroed in on Asher who had Julia sitting on his lap. Their reactions were every bit as I had imagined. Their eyes bulged. Julia went as white as a sheet and started to blubber something.
"Looks like she's seen a ghost," I heard Cade say, then chuckle.
"Get off!" Asher snarled as he pushed Julia off his lap, his eyes still fixed on me.
Now everyone in the cafeteria was watching me, Julia and Asher.
I felt gentle pressure on my arm.
"Come on. Let's go sit," said Jace.
I allowed him to lead me to an empty table in a corner of the room where we all sat. Cade and Chase brought out books, and tried to engage me in conversation. I couldn't concentrate on anything they were saying. Finally, Willa shook my arm.
"It feels good to be back in school, doesn't it?" Willa said, smiling at me.
"Yeah... I guess," I managed to say.
My gaze kept getting drawn to Asher and Julia. They were also staring at me and I knew they were trying to figure out how I was still alive. Julia looked like she was doing a thousand equations in her mind but that didn't concern me.
The more I stared at them, the more the anger in me grew. It felt like lava slowly boiling over.
For all the hurt and torment they had made me go through, they had to pay. As I sat there, I got increasingly sure that I would not leave it to fate to teach them a lesson. They would suffer. I would be the hand of fate that would serve them their punishment.
The rage choked me till it felt hard to breathe. It needed- no- demanded an outlet. My hands clenched on the edges of the table. I pushed to my feet. Immediately four pairs of hands reached for me.
"Hannah," Chase said, holding on to my hand. "Where are you going?"
"I need to do something. I'll be back."
"What do you want to do?" Jace asked, his eyes following my gaze.
"I need to talk to him." I nodded in Asher's direction.
I couldn't tell them what exactly I wanted to do. Not yet.
Willa and her brothers all looked at me like I had lost my mind. Perhaps I had but at this point, I didn't care.
Cade was the first to find his voice. "Why on earth would you want to do that?"
"He's the one person you should avoid," Willa added.
