Chapter 193

HANNAH

I opened my eyes in time to see him snatch a little notebook from one of the guards. He went around to each student, glowering and taking down names.

Jace pulled me close. One arm went around my waist.

"We're in trouble now, honey," he murmured against my hair although he didn't sound overly concerned by that fact.

Soon it was our turn. The dean did a double take, and peered at Jace from under the spectacles perched on his hooked nose.

"Jace Wallace?" he cried.

Jace pulled me Even closer. He sighed. "That's me."

The dean's eyes flickered to me and back to Jace.

"I can't believe this!" he said. "The Alpha's son, one of the rule breakers. Getting wasted on school property!"

For some weird reason, this struck me as funny. A giggle escaped my lips before I could stop it.

"Oops!" I said, clapping my hand over my mouth and then giggling some more.

The dean's eyes narrowed angrily. Jace winced.

"Come with me," the dean said angrily. "The punishment for you two is going to be pretty special."

**********"

"I can't believe you did that!" Willa cried, her eyes all but popping out of her head.

"Oh I did and there were lots of things I can't remember after that."

"Hannah!"

Willa said my name in a kind of shocked gasp and started giggling. People on other seats in the cafeteria started to turn to look at us. Willa stuffed her hand into her mouth to keep the giggles in but her sides kept heaving with laughter.

"That's wild," Willa said when her fit of giggles tapered off.

"Tell me about it," I said, putting my milkshake down. "Still can't believe I fucked Jace in the restroom. I guess I'm living life more... intensely now that Dawson's gone."

"I wish I had been at the party. I thought it was over of Jace's usual boring art group meetings." She sighed. "I missed a lot."

"There's also a downside. Don't forget that," I pointed out. My hand reached up to massage my temples. "I've got this headache that just won't quit. You'd probably have gotten one too if you had come."

Willa snorted. "No, I wouldn't. I handle my alcohol much better than you do." She thought about this, and giggled again. "Actually, no I don't."

A shadow fell over us. I looked up to see a girl holding out a neatly folded square of paper.

"Hey," she said. "Some guy asked me to give you this."

"Who?" I asked, making no move to take the note though she thrust it out to me now.

"It's Devin, the new-"

But Willa didn't wait for her to finish.

"Give it!" she cried, drawing the attention of others in the cafeteria to us again.

In a flash, she was out of her seat and had snatched the note from the startled girl. The girl hung around for a second longer and walked off but not before I had given her an apologetic smile.

Willa's lips moved soundlessly as she read. I didn't bother asking her what the note said because I knew she would tell me anyway.

Her head snapped up.

"He wants to meet you at the football pitch?" she fairly shrieked.

I still didn't understand why she was so obsessed with Devin and I was thinking I probably never would.

I placed a finger against my lips. "Keep it down, Willa. Please."

She thrust her head forward, and hissed, "He wants to meet you at the football pitch. How? Why? How long have you known him for him to send you notes?" Her eyes grew dull with hurt. You've been keeping secrets from me."

I rolled my eyes. "Stop being so melodramatic, Willa. Of course, I'm not. I just didn't think it was necessary to keep discussing Devin every minute of every day like you seem inclined to be doing lately-"

I was interrupted by the sound of Willa drumming her fingers impatiently on the table. "Stop stalling and tell me everything."

"I told you, didn't I, that I've spoken to him. We bumped into each other yesterday. I wanted to go on my way but he wouldn't let me be. Kept asking for my number and my Insta handle. I even met him again at the party last night and he still wouldn't back off. Gosh! The guy's such a pest." I suddenly frowned. Willa's eyes were suddenly sparkling with excitement. "Hey! What are you looking like that for?"

"I've just got a brilliant idea," she chirped.

Her grin made my heart sink some more.

"Am I allowed to hope it doesn't somehow involve Devin?" I said hopefully.

"Of course it does," she replied in a matter-of-fact tone and snatched away the milkshake I was reaching for. "We'll both go to meet him at the pitch. You'll introduce me to him. You'll matchmake us."
