Chapter 244

WILLA

There were about a dozen Willas talking inside my head.

Half of them still couldn't believe that Theron had actually agreed to the fake relationship thing.

The other half kept thinking about that moment when Lucian had stormed out if the cafeteria.

All of them kept agonizing over whether Lucian's got pissed because he had seen me with Theron.

At the thought my heart beat much faster. If that was the case, then my plan was working even better than I had expected.

Was it possible that Lucian actually liked me? That had to be it!

You didn't get jealous over someone you didn't give a damn about, did you?

"Okay people. Settle down. Settle down. We have a fairly long period ahead of us. In groups of two, please!"

The professor's voice addressing the practical class snapped me out of my thoughts. I realized I was standing just inside the lab.

Everyone else had gone in and taken seats. Everyone except me.

Thankfully they were all getting their books and writing materials out. No one had noticed me standing there, lost in thought, staring at nothing.

I hurried over to a black-topped lab table behind which another girl sat. She was the only one who hadn't gotten a partner yet.

By the time I had put on my lab coat, the girl had stopped rummaging around in her bag. She shook back her curtain of hair and took in her partner for the first time.

"Hi," I said, wondering if she was going to be another snob.

The girl's smile was warm and genuine. It lit up her light brown eyes.

"Hi," she said and actually extended her hand to be shaken. I took it quickly, gave it a few pumps. "I'm Sienna and you are..."

"Willa," I replied after a pause. I smiled back at her and she relaxed.

"How are you liking Worchmount so far, Willa?" She asked.

Still looking at me, she dropped her bag on the floor and kicked it under the table.

I answered with a shrug. Sienna laughed.

"I know," she said. "This place can be a lot to take in." She dipped a hand inside her bag for a pen. "Hey, what dorm are you in?"

"The one with the really big statute of the former Lycan king in front of it." I scratched my neck. "Bluemoon dorm."

"Really?" Her eyes went wide with surprise and then delight. "That's my dorm too!"

"Settle down!" barked the professor.

He shot a stern look in our direction.

Sienna and I ducked our heads and giggled when he turned away.

"We don't have all day," the professor said. "Let's begin."

From the large desk in front of the class, the professor took the already sorted apparatus for the chemistry practical session.

Sienna waited until he started handing them out before saying in a much lower tone, "So we're like dorm roomies then. Room number?"

"Twelve," I said.

"Even better. We're close. Mine's nine. Feel free to drop by anytime."

"Oh I will," I said with feeling.

Talking to Sienna had made me realize just how starved I was for female company. Or any company for that matter.

Sienna took a quick look around, saw the professor was still three tables over and brought out her phone.

"We should exchange numbers," she said.

"Absolutely. I was going to say the same thing."

As I keyed in the last digit of my number on Sienna's phone, the professor got to our table. He handed us the apparatus. He then went to the front of the class to explain the theory behind the experiment we were about to do.

After writing some chemical formulas on the white board, he said, "You can start now. Work closely with your partners. Ensure you all participate. I'll be moving around to make sure you're following instructions." He sighed. "I don't need to tell you college undergraduates, do I, that some of those reagents could be quite corrosive."

He stopped to frown at a boy who had almost knocked over a rack of test tubes with his elbow as he sat down. The boy seeing the professor and half the class staring at him, coloured up. He laughed nervously.

"But apparently I do," the professor continued dryly. "Work carefully to avoid nasty accidents."

With that the practical class started.

"This isn't hard," Sienna said under her breath after taking a look at the procedures on the worksheet.

"No, it isn't," I agreed. "We did something similar to this at my high school although I expect the workload will get tougher in the coming weeks."

That led Sienna and I into a conversation about our high schools as we worked. A while later she got up to heat something in a test tube at the Bunsen burner.
