Chapter 117
HANNAH
"Did you really think you could skip school and I wouldn't know?"
I rolled my eyes at Jace, leaning casually against my door, his muscular arms crossed over his chest.
"Seriously, Hannah," he said, latching onto my mood and grinning. "I have eyes at the back of my head, didn't you know?"
"How did you find out?" I asked him.
"Easy. During lunch break, I came to check up on you, then I found out you ditched school, somewhere you were bent on returning to just a few days ago, I might add." He smiled a little to let me know that he was just teasing, not dragging me through the coals about my decision to resume school again. "So tell me... why did you leave school?"
My lips drew up into a pout. "I knew it would be hard, but today was crazy. I couldn't stand everyone gossiping, gawking at me like I'm a freak on show." I sighed. "I just had to get away from all of that before I lost it."
"Everyone's reaction was expected though," Jace said softly. "Would have been weird if you weren't what everyone just focused on today, but I get you. It couldn't have been easy for you. Sorry you had to go through all of that."
I shrugged. "Not your fault. I guess it will get easier with time, but for now..." I lay back down on my bed, facing the ceiling. "... I'll just hide in here for a while and pretend the whole world doesn't exist for as long as I can."
I closed my eyes but could still feel the weight of his stare on me.
"I have an idea," he finally said.
I cracked open one eye to see him stroking his jaw thoughtfully.
"An idea to what? Make things return back to normal?" I asked, only half joking.
I kind of missed the way things were after my mates had rescued me and brought me to their pack, before all this white wolf drama started. I missed getting to know them, when my only worry was if they would like me.
"No. It's something to cheer you up. Why don't you get dressed so I can take you shopping?"
I didn't bother to stifle my groan. "Is that your great idea? Jace, not every girl has the shopping fever. I personally, except on very rare occasions, find shopping boring. Standing for hours, selecting what clothes to buy, trying to decide what outfit matches with what..." I shook my head. "No thank you. I'll pass."
"And who said we had to shop for clothes? We could go book shopping."
I sat up quickly in bed.
"Do you really mean that?" I asked.
"Of course. You in?"
"Yes. I'll get dressed now."
His brown eyes travelled over my body so slowly it was like a sensual caress. His lips curled into a lazy smile. "I would have loved to stay and watch you get undressed, but I have to go get cleaned up myself."
“Get out of my room,” I teased, smiling.
“If you say so.” He bowed, also smiling.
With that he left but was back a few minutes later to meet me already dressed and ready to go. Outside, the driver and a big, beefy bodyguard were waiting.
Like the Alpha had instructed days ago, there were always a guard or two escorting me whenever I was stepping out of the pack house. It was tough having people follow me around like shadows, but I was trying my best to get used to it. It was for my own safety.
As the car sped out of the Estate, the weight in my chest got a little lighter.
Jace was quick to notice.
"Feeling better already, huh?"
I answered with a nod. He leaned forward a little and told the driver to take us to the mall.
"We're going book shopping," he said to the driver before turning to me with a grin.
His hand gently held mine. The sensation of him stroking his thumb over and across my wrist made me relax some more. I leaned into him. What would I have done without my mates? I wondered if I would still be alive without them.
Jace made a sound—a sound of approval—and tipped my head back with a finger so I was staring at him. "Now that looks a lot more like my Hannah. I'm thinking I should take you book shopping more often. What do you think?"
"I think you shouldn't blame me when I spend all of your money," I said. "I have a list as long as my arm of all the books I want to buy. They're all first editions and trust me they don't come cheap, Jace."
He grinned. "I wasn't expecting them to be. My money is yours to spend, sweetheart. Even if you somehow manage to max out my credit card, there will always be more where that came from."
I took a peek at the driver and guard who were looking straight ahead, rubbed my nose against Jace's and murmured, "You know, Jace, you make me feel-"
A deafening bang shattered my words, my thoughts – everything. It was loud, nerve-wracking, and my wolf almost jumped out from inside me.
For a split second, I didn’t understand what had happened. My mouth was still open when something warm and wet splattered on my face and even into my mouth.
I screamed when I realized what it was—the bodyguard's blood!
