Chapter 205
HANNAH
Just then Willa giggled and my attention switched back to her.
Two high deep shades of colour stood out on both her cheeks. Her eyes were alight and alive. She looked so happy, happier than I had seen her in days. The harsh words died in my throat.
"You haven't said anything, Hannah," Willa remarked, her smile fading a little.
I forced a smile. It felt stiff and awkward on my face but it was there all the same.
"I'm happy for you two," I said.
She clearly expected me to say more, perhaps to mention how they were such a cute couple, but there were limits to the lies I could tell. Willa deserved much better than the creep looking at me a little smugly.
"We thought you should be the first to know," Willa said. "I told Devin we're as close as sisters."
"Alright ladies," Devin said. "I'll be on my way now. I'll catch you girls later. At lunchtime, maybe."
He left but not before he kissed Willa and it was not a quick kiss or a peck on the cheek either. He drew her close and deepened the kiss.
With a giggle, Willa pulled away. With an adoring expression on her flushed face, she watched him walk away, stopping from time to time to exchange a few words with a few loitering members of his 'fan club'.
I jerked on her arm and pulled her aside so she wasn't facing Devin. I wanted her entire attention on what I was about to say.
"What are you thinking, Willa?" I said harshly. "He's suddenly your boyfriend now? For goodness sake, you just met this guy like two seconds ago! And now you're a couple? I'm really surprised at you. It's unlike you to be so... blindly trusting."
"I don't have to talk to him forever to be sure I like him," Willa argued. "After all with you, Cade, Chase and Jace you just knew that they were the ones the moment you saw them, didn't you?"
"They were my mates! That's totally different. Devin's not your mate. Besides if you want to go with that argument, I'll remind you that Asher was my mate too. Look how that turned out."
"Devin's nothing like Asher," Willa pointed out.
"I'm not saying he is. But then I'm not saying he's not. You don't know anything about him. Apart from what you see on social media," I hastened to add when I saw she was about to say something, probably to give me a lowdown of whatever Devin posts on his page. "And even then a lot of those could be lies. You have no way of knowing."
Willa bit her lip. "Devin's a good guy. I know it. I thought you would approve once you saw how happy we are together. Now..."
She trailed off with a sigh.
"I'm not saying no," I said quietly. "All I'm saying is that this whole thing seems rushed. Even your brothers don't know you are dating Devin yet... What?"
A wary look had jumped into her eyes. "About that... I was hoping you would help me."
"Help you do what exactly?" I said, not sure I liked where the conversation was heading.
"I was thinking- that maybe you could tell my brothers about me and Devin being a-"
"No. Nope. Absolutely not."
Willa grabbed my arm as I turned away. "Hannah listen-"
"If you want them to know about it, then tell them yourself. Let them make up their own minds about Devin."
"What if they don't like him?"
"You can't know that for sure," I said, hoping they wouldn't.
In fact, I was almost sure they wouldn't. My mates would be able to spot a player faster than Willa ever could. And maybe somewhere deep down in a part of Willa that had not yet been blinded with infatuation for Devin, Willa knew what Devin was. That was why she wanted me to broach the subject of her relationship with her brothers first.
"Do it for me," she pleaded. "Please, you are my best friend."
"Okay. How about this? Just give this thing between you two a little time. Don't rush it yet. You're not mates after all. When you've gotten to know Devin a little better, then we can talk about telling your brothers. Sound good?"
Not looking convinced, Willa shook her head.
"You don't know what's like for me, not having found my mate yet," she said. "I have you and my brothers and my dad but I still feel alone. Devin makes me feel finally complete. Is that such a bad thing?"
I took in a deep breath, trying to be more open to her relationship.
"I'm sorry," I said. "It's fine. I will respect your decision on this one. I'm happy for you, Willa. Really I am."
