Chapter 027

HANNAH

The tension in the room was so palpable it felt like it could be cut with a knife. The only sounds were the nervous shuffling of my mother's feet, my laboured breathing and maybe the pounding of my heart. I was pretty sure it was beating so loud that everyone could hear it. I used to be nobody but recently, it felt like my every move was monitored and decided for me.

I glanced at my wristwatch again, was surprised to see that barely five minutes had passed. Only five minutes? It felt already like five hours. Where were Jace, Cade and Chase? Seeing them here would make me feel so much better.

I heard a footfall. I quickly turned towards the door but saw it was just one of the Alpha's guards coming to have a few words with Asher. Asher didn't seem to be paying attention to what the guard was saying. He was glaring concentratedly at me. He had been doing so ever since I walked into the room. I looked away at once, and stared at the floor. Somewhere on my right sat the Alpha. I didn't need to look at him to feel the full force of his displeasure. I refused to even look in his direction. I was terrified of what I would see in his eyes.

"The triplets got the letter, didn't they?" Alpha Dawson said, finally breaking the silence.

"Yes, they did father," Asher replied. "I made damn sure of it. They got it about the same time as... her."

My mother stiffened, and clasped my hand tightly. I knew she was nervous or maybe scared so I touched her hand gently. I hated that she had to be here and face the man who banished her husband cruelly. It was like opening an old wound and my mother didn't deserve it.

"I see." Alpha Dawson groaned after a moment. "They got the letter and yet they are late. They must have a very high opinion of what they can get away with for them to dare waste my time. Who do they even think they are?"

In reply, I heard Asher mutter something that sounded like 'a bunch of assholes'. If they were any assholes I knew, it was him and his father. Both of them deserved all the terrible things in life and my rejection would be the first. I knew my father would want that.

Alpha Dawson's voice reverberated with arrogance as he continued to grumble. Like his son, he also seemed to think that the whole world revolved around him. The fact that my mates were sons of an equally powerful Alpha was lost on him.

"Soon enough, the pups will find out soon enough that there are consequences of trying to disrespect me, in my pack no less," he continued.

The room fell silent again. My worry redoubled. Why had the triplets not arrived yet? Had they changed their minds about coming? Maybe they had decided that fighting to keep me as their mate was more trouble than it was worth. Maybe their father had cautioned them not to pursue this. If they had backed out, then I was completely done for.

Again, I heard the sound of heavy footfalls, of several people this time. As I turned, the door opened. In came Alpha Wallace, closely followed by all his sons. They seemed to fill up the entire meeting room. I sagged against my chair in relief, released a pent up breath I wasn't aware I had been holding.

The triplets looked like superheroes arriving at the critical moment to save the day. Looking at them, I couldn't for a second believe that these perfect specimens of manhood were truly mine. Asher didn't stand a chance with them around.

"You're late," Alpha Dawson pointed out.

"We are here," was Alpha Wallace's reply."We had other things to do before coming."

Alpha Dawson started to say something, but thought better of it. Afterall, he was lucky that Alpha Wallace had even accepted to have the meeting. Jace, Cade and Chase coldly inclined their heads in his direction. Without acknowledging Asher who was now white with rage, the triplets stood around with their arms crossed, looking menacing until a guard stepped forward to wave them into seats.

"I will go straight to the point," Alpha Dawson said, adjusting in his seat which looked more like a throne than a chair.

No doubt he was sitting on that to impress, or intimidate everyone. Alpha Wallace and his sons didn't look the least bit intimidated, only impatient and bored.

Alpha Dawson glanced briefly around the room before he spoke.

"I called this meeting to discuss the issue of Hannah being my son's mate as you all know. I demand that Asher marks Hannah as his."
