Chapter 047

CADE

He turned and opened the door. We followed him back into the room. I felt my teeth grind against the roof of my mouth the moment my eyes fell on Hannah. The pain I felt at seeing her lying there was indescribable.
Beside me, Jace was all tense, and I knew he felt it too. I wanted to hurt the person who had done this to her so badly that they would wish for death.

"What is it you want to show us?" I asked tersely.

Being here was hard and overwhelming. My wolf stirred restlessly.

"Just this." He took the napkin he had placed over Hannah's head and beckoned on us to come closer. At the same instant, Jace and I stepped forward. When I saw what the doctor was showing us, I gasped in surprise and took two steps back involuntarily. "That's what has got me so confused."

I blinked several times to make sure what I was seeing wasn't a trick of the light. It wasn't.

Jace, whose mouth hung agape, asked, "Wh-what is this?"

"Why is her hair getting white?" I asked.

I had never heard of or seen a victim of wolfsbane poisoning sprout white hair.

"That's what I said before. I don't know why this is happening. In all my years of experience, I have never seen anything like this, and I don't know of anyone who has either."

I moved closer and squatted beside the bed to get a better look. I could see that Hannah's hair was turning white from the roots. Not grey but pure white like snow in winter. Precious little now remained of the previous colour of her hair. What the hell was happening to her?

"This is... I have no words," I said. “I don-don’t understand what’s happening.”

"Also, take a look at this." The doctor's fingers lightly moved over her skin. They traced the veins in her arm. "Do you see how the darkness of the veins is fading from the other parts of her body and are moving to her face? It's like this all over her body."

Now that the doctor had pointed it out, I could see it. I wondered why I hadn't noticed it before. This was getting more weird by the second.

"Do you have any theory for why that is happening?" Jace asked.

"I think I do," the doctor said slowly. "It's almost as if her body is rejecting the wolfsbane and trying to force it out. Her veins are functioning like some kind of branched straw sucking out the wolfsbane and gathering it up where it can later be... expelled."

I glanced at Jace, who looked as shocked and confused as I felt. At this point, so many thoughts and questions were running through my mind, but the only one I could think of to say- and it was by far the most important- was, "Is she going to recover? Is that what this means?"

"I wish I knew. At this point, I can't say anything definite, especially since this case is in a class of its own. If I had not witnessed this with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. It's supposed to be impossible for her to have lived this long after ingesting wolfsbane of that quantity. Even the tiniest, diluted drop of wolfsbane can kill an Omega of her status. This is... mind-blowing. I'm so sorry, but I can't draw any conclusions or theories at this point. My best bet is just to keep observing her in the hopes that I might discover something new." We stood silently, staring down at Hannah for a long moment before the doctor roused himself and shook his head slightly. "Excuse me. I really have to be on my way now. Call me if there are any changes in her condition."

Bowing slightly, he left the room.

Jace and I didn't talk. There was nothing to say. We just kept looking at Hannah, then at ourselves, as we struggled to find an explanation for what was happening to our mate.

Even when Chase burst into the room about a quarter of an hour later, we still had not moved. It was like time had frozen as we tried to make sense of what happened to Hannah or what was happening to her.

"Hey," Chase said. "What are you two doing standing around- WOAH! What is that?" His finger shook slightly as he pointed at Hannah's hair. He looked to us for an explanation. "What's the big idea, doing that to her hair?"

"We didn't do that," Jace shook his head.

"Then who did? Is this part of the doctor's treatment or something?"

"We need to talk. Now." I turned toward the door before I finished my statement.

I left the room, and they followed immediately.
