Chapter 188

HANNAH

I told Willa I would be right back. I followed Jace outside to the parking lot. Sure enough, I saw a sleek Mercedes with the insignia of the Lycan pack on the car's plate number. It was Edward all right.

He was sitting in the car, waiting but got out as Jace and I got closer.

"I'll leave you two to it. Got to get to class. I'm late already," Jace said.

He let go of my hand and went off.

"Hello Hannah," Edward said, tugging on his earlobe absently.

"Edward. Hi," I said.

And then we just stood there, two people who didn't quite know what to say to each other. I liked Edward but I supposed as long as he thought there could be something between us, our meetings would still keep being awkward.

Edward broke the awkward silence.

"I wanted to congratulate you on finally getting rid of your enemy," he said. "Off the record, I thought Dawson was a real pain in the ass. I'm glad he's gone."

I exhaled. For a moment there I thought he wanted to talk about the whole imprinting thing again.

I returned his smile. "Thanks. I must say it's a relief finally not having Dawson breathing down my neck. If I had known you were coming, I would have brought some cake and maybe some wine along so we could celebrate properly."

Edward laughed. I joined in. It felt good to laugh with him and it broke the ice between us somehow. I leaned against the car next to him. We stared at the vast expanse of the volleyball court we could see from here.

When we had both stopped laughing, Edward said, "Actually I came to tell you a bit of good news."

My ears perked up. "Oh? What's that?"

Edward's smile was sweet and a little shy. "I found my second chance mate. I thought you would like to know."

"Of course I would!" I exclaimed.

I was genuinely happy for him. It felt like a weight I didn't know I had been lugging around had been rolled off me. Now I could finally stop feeling guilty about turning him down.

"Thank you for telling me," I said. "I'm glad you still think of me as a friend."

"I don't have many friends. I'll be a fool to throw away the few ones I've got."

"True." I laughed.

"Hold on. I've got her picture here."

He pulled his phone out of his trouser pockets, scrolled through and finally handed it over to me. Smiling into the camera was a girl, blonde like Edward with big brown eyes and Edward's shy smile. I felt an answering smile spread across my own lips.

Fate had given Edward a mate very similar to him. I was suddenly sure they would always get along.

"She's really pretty," I said and meant it. The girl was a looker. I didn't think even the Lycan queen could find any fault with her appearance.

Edward's eyes softened as he took the phone and glanced at the screen briefly before putting it away. "I met her some days ago. Her name's Samantha."

"Samantha," I repeated. "Also a really pretty name."

Edward nodded his thanks. "I'm really glad I met you, Hannah. If you believe that stuff about the goddess having plans for us all and knowing what's best for us all, I'll say she made me meet you first, knowing you would make me feel more confident about myself. And then I got to meet Samantha, my actual mate, after I was already a better version of myself."

"You see? I told you everything would work out in the end and it did."

"Maybe prophecy goes hand in hand with being the white wolf then," he teased.

"Maybe."

Edward opened his arms. Without hesitation, I hugged him. He hugged me tightly.

Against my hair, he murmured softly, "Thank you."

"Thank you too Edward." I said.

He said something about allowing me to get back to class then got into his car. I got a glimpse of a driver engaging the gear before the tinted windows were rolled up.

I waved until his car was out of sight. Then started walking back, past the banner which several students were clustered under and laughing at now. My phone beeped, signalling an incoming message.

I had just unlocked it when I collided with someone with such force my phone nearly flew out of my grasp.

"Oh I'm so sorry," I gasped, shoving the phone back into my pocket.

The boy I had bumped into didn't seem offended. He was staring at me with concentrated interest that was more than a little unnerving.

"I'm so sorry," I said again. "I wasn't watching where I was going. It was totally my fault."

The boy smiled.

"I know you," he said.
