Chapter 272
WILLA
"My pack isn't small. In fact it got larger last year. My father won a duel. He got the other Alpha's pack. My family rules two packs now. My brothers are the Alpha's. Their Luna is the white wolf."
Someone's spoon fell into their plate with a clatter. You could have cut the sudden silence with a knife.
All around I heard the words 'the white wolf' passed around.
"A little nobody like you doesn't even know what a white wolf is," Naomi said.
No one laughed this time. I didn't think they had even heard her. They were all looking at me.
"Really?" one of the boys serving up the food asked. "You know the white wolf? The one that um-" He frowned in an effort to remember something. "-comes around only once in every hundred years?"
"Yes," I said. "The very same."
"Wow!" said a girl by my side. "I've heard of her and how powerful she is. She's really as powerful as they say?"
"Even more so. I've seen her do things you wouldn't believe."
"It's been my dream to meet her someday," the girl said. "Haven't heard as much as I'd like about her though."
"Hannah's a private person most of the time but she's really doing good work at our pack."
"Hannah?"
"Yeah. Hannah Baker. That's her name. We're best friends. We used to do everything together before I came here. She's actually more like the sister I never had."
Every single person was listening now. Most weren't even eating anymore. Naomi, no doubt regretting her outburst that had led to this conversation, looked like she had just bitten into something bitter.
Only Lucian looked completely unaffected. He didn't even appear to be listening.
He had finished his meal and that slightly bored expression was back on his face.
"Tell us more about her," the girl beside me said.
Another boy said, "My father told me she was almost kidnapped once while riding in a car with the son of the Alpha of the pack she was staying at."
"That was my brother, Jace," I said.
"I heard the person behind the kidnap attempt was-"
"Greenstone pack, I think," someone supplied.
The boy nodded. "Yes. I think that's it. My father said the white wolf fought off all the kidnappers herself."
Everyone looked to me for an answer.
I said, "I wasn't exactly there but I got the details from my brother and Hannah too..."
I told them all about the kidnapping attempt and then about the time Asher had managed to kidnap Hannah for real.
They were looking at me with grudging respect when I got to the part about finding out that Mia was a mole. It took a while to finish telling the story. They kept interrupting to ask for more details.
"Damn, Willa!" someone said. "You almost got killed. Moonshade poisoning is no joke."
"It's not," I agreed.
"Hey Willa! How about getting Hannah to visit Worchmount one of these days?" some other person asked.
Everyone started talking at once about how getting the white wolf to come to our school was a brilliant idea.
"I'll tell her," I promised. "I'm sure she'll come. She's always wanted to come to Worchmount anyway."
Finally Lucian got to his feet. The others seeing him, reluctantly suddenly got to theirs.
"All of you be ready in five minutes," he called over his shoulder as he walked away. "We have a long day ahead of us."
After Luciana's brief address, a reminder of the plants we were supposed to be looking for and the special prize he had waiting, we spread out in different directions.
All of the students moved in groups. I purposely drifted away from the group I was in as quickly as I could.
As I moved further away from them, I kept pretending to examine some plants.
They could find their rare plants themselves, I thought. I was more interested in taking pictures of the breathtaking view of the woods. In the strong morning sunlight, the whole place was ten times more beautiful than it had been yesterday.
I took photos of everything especially the insects and the birds. I climbed a little hill, found a mossy boulder to seat on.
I went through all the pictures I had taken, found some I would send across to Hannah and my brothers. When I was done, I put the phone back into my bag.
I decided to explore the woods further down. I got up, started in the direction of the woods.
Suddenly, the ground beneath my feet gave way. For a split second my foot hung suspended in space. Then I started to fall into the ditch I hadn't noticed.
As I opened my mouth to scream, a hand shot out and grabbed my arm.
