Chapter 043

CADE

"But why didn't you come to us in the beginning?" I asked suddenly. All these regrets were all well and good, but she wouldn't have had any cause to regret anything if we had known of Alpha Dawson's ruse before now. It made my blood boil to think of how Asher and his father had made us look like fools at the meeting, letting us go through the charade of hearing Hannah choose. All the while, they had been laughing right in our faces. "You should have told us about his plan. If you had, we would have offered you protection. Hannah too."

Chase nodded. "Yeah. We are also Alpha's sons, Mrs Baker. If there is anyone that could offer you and your daughter security, it's us. Here..." He looked around the room and let out a bitter laugh. "I would like to see him and his goons attempt to break in here to take anything or anyone. This place is as safe as a fortress."

"I know. I know," she moaned. "But you don't know Alpha Dawson the way I do. Do you know what he did recently? He got your principal beaten up and tortured. Yes," she added, seeing our looks of surprise. "I heard one of you got into a fight with Asher and that the principal refused to punish him. That was his only offense. Rumour has it that Alpha Dawson even briefly contemplating killing him."

"Son of a bitch," growled Chase.

I, for one, didn't think I could speak. At least not just yet. I just kept thinking that if Alpha Dawson could torture and almost kill a man for something as little as not giving Jace a suspension, what couldn't he do to Hannah? And she had endured all that suffering for her mother. We should have been there for her. We failed her.

"Even if I had told you about what happened, there is no way you could have protected my daughter around the clock. Alpha Dawson would have still gotten to her. She even goes to that school." She burst into tears, rocked back and forth on the sofa. "I was scared. I wanted to protect her too. I knew she would never be happy with Asher but I thought that at least she would be alive and safe at the pack house. But now I don't even have that hope anymore. Something bad has happened to Hannah. I know it."

"Now take it easy," Chase said soothingly. "I know you're worried about her. We all are but you can't be a hundred percent sure that she's in danger."

"But I am. I feel it here." She placed a hand over her heart. "When you have children of your own, you'll understand. There's something that tells me she's hurt. Maybe she's even dying." She beat her fists together. "Oh what am I going to do? How do I get her out of there?"

I felt her shoulder shaking with the force of her sobs as I laid a hand on it. "It's alright. At least, it's going to be. As for getting her out, tomorrow, we'll all go to Alpha Dawson's place to confront him. We'll free Hannah from that hellhole, I promise you."

One look at my brother's faces and I knew they were completely in support of my plan.

"We need a course of action. What do we do if he doesn't want to let her go?" I asked them.

Chase cracked his knuckles. "They'll let her go one way or the other. I think we should tell father that- Well? What is it?"

A guard had run, panting into the room. He paused for a second to catch his breath.

"I'm sorry to interrupt," he said. "But there's a girl outside. She got here and then passed out the next minute."

"A girl?" I said. "What girl? Who is she?"

He glanced at Hannah's mother. "It's Miss Hannah, the girl who used to come here.”

There was a moment's silence in which we all tried to process what the guard had just told us, and then we were all running, heading outside. Two guards were carrying an unconscious Hannah in. I shouted for them to set her down immediately. I had noticed something, something that filled me with horror. I caught her in my arms as they laid her gently on the ground.

Hannah was deathly pale, as white as a sheet. She hardly seemed to be breathing. But she was. Thank the goddess she was!

Out of her nostrils, the tips of her fingers and mouth, blood that looked black and almost clotted seeped. There was only one substance that left this kind of mark on our kind.
I turned, grabbed the front of Jace's shirt and shook him. Somewhere behind me, Hannah's mother was screaming.

"The doctor," I yelled. "Call the doctor now! She's been poisoned. It's wolfsbane."
