Chapter 198

HANNAH

Willa didn't say anything for a long time after I had told her of the dream I had. All thoughts of Devin were gone now.

Her hands soothed and massaged mine gently. She must have picked up on some of my lingering horror while I had been narrating the dream. It had been hard to keep it out of my face, my voice.

I kept thinking of those eyes, Asher's dead glazed eyes staring right at me with a promise of death while he dragged me into a hole into which I knew worse things were waiting.

I couldn't suppress a shiver. I supposed the memory would fade with time though. I hoped it would.

"What do you think?" I said when I could bear the silence no longer. "Chase thinks it's an omen, like the ones I've had before."

"It's one of two things," Willa said slowly. "It's either you're overthinking things because you don't know where Asher is, what he's up to and all that. The other option is your dream is actually like Chase said, an omen, a sign that Asher is planning something."

I felt my heart sink even further. Hearing Chase and now Willa voice out my fears was even more scary.

It had felt divine... these last few days without the threat of death or a kidnap hanging over my head. Now it felt like I was back to square A;  always looking over my shoulder, always watching. always suspecting, never trusting.

Willa picked up on my anxiety again. Her hand on mine tightened. I held on to it.

"It's okay," she soothed. "Don't sweat it. Dawson is gone. Asher is alone now. All their stupid allies are either on the run or arrested. What could he possibly do to you now? And let's face it, he doesn't really have Dawson's brain for scheming..."

"But the dream-" I interrupted.

I couldn't get past that. If the dream was actually a prophecy, then allies or not, Asher was actually plotting something.

Willa spoke haltingly. "Oh yes... the dream. I won't lie to you though... there's still a possibility he could still be planning something.  But then how could he possibly be a threat to you now? That's the big question." She pondered on it, shook her head when she couldn't think of anything. "I'm sorry, Hannah. I wish I had all the answers you want."

"It's okay," I said. "At least talking to you about it made me feel a little better."

Which was true. To an extent. Way deep down the worry still kept clawing on my insides.

"What I want you to do now is to be more careful than ever. But try not to worry too much. My brothers will take care of you. You're as safe as can be with us."

She leaned forward to kissed my cheek. I left her, headed to my own room.

"Come to me if you have any more dreams like that, okay? We'll figure it out together," she called after me.

She had gotten out of bed now and was moving about, starting to prepare for the day ahead.

I said I would do just that.

Cade was waiting in my room. He was on his feet the moment I opened the door, grinning at me.

"What are you doing up so early on a weekend?" I asked him teasingly.

"I always rise with the sun, sweetheart," he said. "Been at the training ground for almost an hour already. I came to see you, found out you were out somewhere."

"Went to see Willa," I said.

I thought about Devin again and thought of how lucky he had been to get out of the house undetected.

"Ah. What did you girls gossip about today?"

It was then I noticed he had both hands clasped behind his back and hadn't moved them since I came in.

"What do you have there?" I asked, getting close and leaning to the side to get a better look.

He moved backwards and sideways. His grin got wider.

"Wouldn't you like to know," he said.

"So are you going to tell me or are you going to make me guess?"

"The first." He put out his hand. It was empty and first and then he moved his fingers together. Like magic, two thick squares of paper tucked between his fingers appeared.

"Neat trick," I said.

I took and examined them.

"Movie tickets," I said, looking up at him.

"Yes. I think it's long overdue for me to take you on a regular date, don't you? The movie's for tonight. Will you come with me? Say yes now."

I grinned. "Controlling much. That didn't sound like a request. What if I said no?"

He shrugged. "Then I would convince you to say yes."
