Chapter 320

WILLA
I didn't know what to do.
If I picked Theron's call, it would ruin the mood. I had been reaching for the phone.
Now I let my hand drop back to my side. I decided there was time enough to talk to Theron later.
Lucian, previously tense, relaxed.
He pushed the phone across the table to me and motioned for me to take it.
"Go on," he said. "Answer it. I won't be mad, I promise. Theron still thinks your plan is still on anyway. He's probably calling to tell you what other brilliant plans he has today for making me jealous."
Lucian grinned to show he was teasing. I thought for a moment, shook my head.
"I'll talk to him when I see him at school," I said and tapped the red circle, ending the call. I picked up my fork and resumed eating. "I don't want to ruin the mood."
Lucian shrugged. "Your choice. By the way, now that you've had a taste, what do you think of my cooking?"
I was about to tease him about it when my phone rang again. I ended the call again.
When Theron kept calling and showed no signs of stopping, I apologized and told Lucian I would have to take it. I left Lucian at the table and wandered over to the window answering the phone.
The moment I picked up, Theron's accusing voice came floating through the line.
"What's going on?" he said sharply. "I've been calling and calling."
"I've been..." I stopped.
"You've been?"
"Busy," I finished.
"Busy with what? Also where are you? I'm outside your room. I've been knocking but it seems you aren't in. We need to talk. Tell me where you are so I'll come see you."
"You can't."
"Huh?"
I took in a deep breath. This was not going to be easy considering how Theron had behaved the last time I had talked to him about Lucian, but it had to be done. Theron deserved the truth at least.
"Right now I'm at Lucian's place," I said and waited for the explosion that was sure to follow.
I heard Theron's harsh exhale like he was standing right next to me.
"What?" he exclaimed, his voice going up a note. He souny furious. "L-Lucian? How the hell did that happen? What are you doing there? Wait. Did that asshole sweet-talk you into doing something you didn't want to do? If he did, by god, I'll punch him-"
"He didn't do anything, okay?" I said quickly. "It was purely my decision to be here. Listen, Theron... the thing is Lucian and I are together now. We're a couple."
"How? Why? For goodness sake, Willa! We were together only yesterday! Why didn't you tell me? Have you been lying to me all this time."
"Calm down, Theron. I didn't tell you because this just happened only last night. We had a talk, Lucian and I. We cleared things up. He told me how he really felt about me. I was going to tell you all about it later today but since you called, I decided to tell you at once."
There was silence from Theron's end. Silence so long I would have thought the call had been disconnected if not for the sound of his heavy breathing.
Finally he said in a low voice, "Why are you letting Lucian play you?"
"What are you talking about?" I said, matching his curt tone.
It was a warning for him to drop it. But of course Theron didn't.
"You're a smart girl, Willa. Or at least I thought you were. You've seen for yourself the kind of person Lucian is. Do you seriously believe he is going to commit to you because he told you so? He's playing you for a damn fool, Willa! And you're letting him. For fuck's sake, when are you going to learn?"
"You're wrong!" I bit off, very angry now. "And if getting mated and marked by mate is your definition of getting played, then I'm happy to have been played!"
The phone was plucked from my hand. I started a little. I had almost forgotten that Lucian was in the room.
Lucian, his eyes glittering angrily, pressed the phone to his ear. He was gripping the phone so tightly his knuckles were white.
Theron was still saying something but I couldn't hear it.
"Listen up, asshole," he growled. "You heard the girl. We're a couple now, so fuck off and don't ever call this number again!"
He hit the red button, threw the phone on the counter. The light atmosphere was gone. Now there was scarcely concealed tension in the air.
This was what I had been avoiding. I bit down on my lip, not knowing what to say to ease the sudden tension.
