Chapter 241

LUCIAN

I remained in the bathroom for a while. When I could stall no longer, I flushed the john and came out, hoping Naomi would have fallen asleep.

No such luck. She was sitting up in bed, looking more awake than ever. Her lips were turned down at the corners. Two frown lines had appeared between her brows. Her lips were so thin they had almost disappeared.

I groaned internally. She was in full blown nagging mode now.

"You said nothing was wrong..." she began.

"Yeah," I said and faked a yawn.

That was always her opening line for her nagging sessions. Something I said.

The fact that I had spent too long in the bathroom would make it worse. She would call it 'avoiding a healthy conversation' like those self help mags she liked to bury her face in would say.

Naomi and I had been dating for over a year now and I hated her nagging the most. Sometimes I found myself wishing we weren't in this relationship, that things were how they used to be between us.

A year ago we had had the perfect arrangement. We were hooking up, having sex. No strings or emotions attached. Just the way I liked it.

Then my father had gotten wind of it. Nothing that happened in Worchmount or in my life ever seemed to get past him.

The old man had asked me to make my 'thing' with Naomi official. Reason? Her father was a top ranking official who knew all the right people in the right places.

"Being seen with her will be good for your image, son," he had said. "In whatever you do, you must always think of your position."

He had clapped me on the back and that had been that.

Naomi gripped my elbow and turned me so I was facing her.

"Is something going on?" Naomi asked.

"Huh?" I put on my most confused expression. "Something like what?"

I expected her to say 'the sex' but what came next out of her mouth completely threw me off.

Her lips got even thinner. She sniffed. "You've got my stupid roommate's scent all over you."

I found myself grabbing a fistful of the sheets. I bit my lip to stop myself from yelling something at her. I couldn't tell if I was reacting to her calling Willa stupid.

In a low quiet voice I said, "I don't know what you mean. Lisa, Carmen and I have always gotten along. They're your friends, aren't they? You liked that we've all been on a friendly footing so what change-"

Naomi tossed her head impatiently. "I'm not talking about Lisa and Carmen and you know it! I'm talking about the new werewolf girl- Willa. She was there when you came to pick me up. Didn't you see her?"

"I suppose I did," I said slowly and shrugged.

Would Naomi next accuse me of staring at Willa for too long? How long had our eyes locked for anyway?

In my head it had been just a few seconds. But time did odd things whenever I saw Willa.

What if it had been more than a few seconds? A minute? Two? Long enough for Naomi to notice something was off?

"And there you are, zoning out again!" Naomi accused in a shrill voice.

"What-"

"I just know that girl is at the back of this somehow. Last night she came in, reeking of you. She gave the excuse that it was because you were one of her supervisors at the wolfing ritual. But my instincts don't lie!"

"If she said we ran into each other there then it's probably true, Naomi. Give it a rest!"

"No. I can't! Not when it's tearing us apart. You have to-"

"Leave."

She stopped, blinked.

In a quieter voice she said, "What?"

"You heard me." I picked her panties off the floor, threw them at her. "Get your things and get the hell out."

Her mouth dropped open. She touched my arm. I shook it off. "Babe- baby... You- you can't mean that. We just made love."

"And you ruined the moment. I can't deal right now."

When she made no move to leave, just sat there staring at me, I moved around picking up her things.

I dumped them in her lap. I jerked my thumb towards the door.

Her lips trembled. "I'm sorry, Lucian. I didn't mean to upset you. I was just-"

"Are you going to leave or do you want me to drag you out?"

Finally she saw I wasn't joking. She threw on her clothes and with one last half pleading, half reproachful look at me on her way out the door, she left.

When the door finally closed behind her, I collapsed into a chair.

Damn! This was going to be a long, long semester.
