Chapter 034
ASHER
I could tell my old man was pissed from the moment I walked into his study. I wondered what was biting him. No doubt it was something or the other to do with the pack's administration. I was more concerned about his bad timing. Why he hadn't waited a few minutes more until after I was done with Hannah? That bitch was asking for it.
"Where have you been?" my father barked, breaking into my thoughts.
"Huh?"
"I looked for you all over the house and in your room. You weren't there."
"I was in Hannah's room. Before the guard interrupted, I was you know..." I lifted one shoulder in a shrug. "...trying to fuck the bitch."
"You were what?"
I raised an eyebrow. Why did he sound so disapproving? It was surprising because my father was many things, but not a prude.
"I said I was about to fu-"
"Yes I heard you the first time, Asher but this is not the time to have sex!"
"Why?" I grumbled. "She's now my mate, isn't she? She's going to get screwed now or later, so what's the problem?"
"The problem is that you of all people should know Icestone pack will not back down without a fight now that we have Hannah. Why do I have to tell you everything? Don’t you ever think with your brain?!”
I stared at my father in disbelief. All this angst was worry about the Icestone pack? It looked like this was going to be a lengthy conversation so I plonked down into the chair opposite him.
"Dad, I think your concerns are completely unnecessary. Icestone pack is not going to attack us. They were given strict instructions to stay away from Hannah, remember? They're going to keep to the rules. Besides they obeyed the rules when you told them not to contact Hannah when she was er- supposedly thinking about choosing a mate."
Disgust was written all over his features as he looked- no- glared at me. "You have obviously learnt nothing which is disappointing since I am grooming you to become the next Alpha of this pack. Did you actually think it was going to be that easy? That the Wallace's are going to walk off into the sunset after this? Think, boy. Think. Those boys still share the mate bond with Hannah and from my observation, they are not the kind to give up on something so easily. Trust me, they won't sit back to watch Hannah getting mated to you without attempting to do something about it."
I frowned, feeling the first time stirrings of unease. Yes, the Wallace boys were stubborn and daring too. Not many people, even if they were Alpha's sons, would have had the audacity to challenge me over a girl, mate or not. "What am I supposed to do now?"
"Now you're asking the right questions. First, Hannah must be confined to this house for the seven days before the mating ceremony. She must be under guard day and night without fail. And at school..." His fingers drummed on the desk as he thought. "I will have a word with your principal. I will tell him to make sure students from Icestone pack are seperated from students from our pack. I'll minimize or cut off all contact with them. When that happens, they will find no way to get to her."
"I don't know if the principal will do what you want," I said. "He seems to be on the Wallace's side these days."
He looked up at me sharply. "Why do you say that?"
"Weeks ago, Jace Wallace and I got into that fight in school. Things got rough. Half of the school came to watch. A teacher got involved and we ended up in the principal's office. The principal refused to punish Jace when I asked him to even though he had broken my nose. He let the asshole go free, said he was dismissing me with a warning. He disrespected me in front of them so its possible he’s not on our side anymore.”
"Asher!" my father snarled.
"What? Jace started it. What was I supposed to do? Let him beat me up?"
"I don't give a damn about who started what. What I want to know is why you didn't tell me about this until now."
"We had bigger problems on our hands. It didn't seem very important."
He slammed the desk so hard a couple of objects rolled off it and fell to the floor. "What the hell is wrong with you? Can't you think beyond the moment? Everything about your relationship with Hannah is important. Everything! People are watching, especially the council. Those students you said were watching, they will talk and by now the entire pack will know that my son was beaten up by Jace and the principal did nothing. Asher, under no circumstances must we appear weak. Under no circumstances must people think rightly or wrongly, that the Wallace's have the upper hand. Do you understand?"
