Chapter 167

HANNAH

I sat stiffly straight in the chair, staring out of the window, trying everything I could to hold on to my temper but my foot tapping on the floor gave me away.

Cade had some explaining to do. No, not even some. A lot.

I heard Sophie's words over and over in my head like a record stuck on replay. If there was any truth to what she had said, I would-

The door opened. I sprang to my feet. Cade's hands inched around the door then he walked in. He abruptly stopped in his tracks.

"Surprised to see me?" I asked and before he could reply I went on. "Where are you coming from?"

Cade blinked but didn't answer. For someone sneaking around, he should have had some sort of cover story ready.

"I asked you a question, Cade," I said, speaking slowly and distinctly. "Where have you been."

"I was with Sophie's in her room," he said.

"Sophie's room!" I exclaimed. I had expected this answer of course, but it still stung like hell to have my suspicions confirmed. "I knew it. So Sophie's room is where you hang out now? The rest of the house is suddenly too small for you to wander around?"

"Come on, Hannah. It's not like that. It's not what you think."

I regarded him coldly. "Wow Cade. I never thought I would hear you use that classic line. Tell me, what is it you assume I'm thinking? Are you having a guilty conscience already?"

"Right now, it's pretty obvious what you're implying. I-" He paused. "Look let me explain-"

I snorted. "Explain away! But don't count on me believing your lies."

"Sophie was hurt and scared after her..." He paused and searched for the right word. "...quarrel with you. I just went to see how she was doing and to reassure her that you're a nice person really. I don't want her to run with the impression that you're a monster. You know what she thinks about you may also trickle down to the others that are going to help us fight this war. We want them to know they're fighting on the side of the good guys. No point doing things that will make them believe Dawson's lies about you."

I clapped my hands. Once. Twice.

"How nice," I said mockingly. "Cade, the diplomat. I didn't know you cared so much about peace. So in essence, it was really because of me that you went to spend quality time in Sophie's room for heaven knows how long. So thoughtful of you. I suppose I should thank you for thinking of me when you were having a good time with her."

"Please don't overreact," he pleaded.

My voice shot up. "Did I just hear you say overreact? You have no right to tell me that after what you did. Oh don't give me that innocent look! Do I have to remind you how you acted with Edward?"

"That's completely different!" he cried.

"Different how? If I were the one locked up in Edward's room, you would have lost your shit  even if I had told you we had been discussing... war strategies. Wouldn't you?"

"It's not the same thing," he protested, running his fingers through his hair. "Edward wanted you. It was obvious. He said so himself. But Sophie is just- she's not even a friend. She's just an acquaintance. I don't want anything to do with her."

I raised a brow. "You don't?"

"Of course I don't!"

"Then what were you doing in her room yesterday?"

Cade did not move. He didn't so much as blink.

I had to hand it to him. His look of surprise looked real but I wasn't deceived though.

"What are you talking about?" he said. "I didn't even go close to Sophie's room yesterday."

"Well, I don't believe you," I said.

And I didn't. He was just coming from her room so how possible was it that this was his first visit to her?

"I don't know what you want me to say," Cade said.

"The truth. Say the truth and stop lying to my face."

He flushed angrily. "For fuck's sake stop calling me a liar! I don't know where this is coming from or who put these silly notions in your head about me cheating, but I'm shocked you're behaving so childishly!"

"So I'm childish now. Is that what you're saying?"

Cade shrugged. "Your words. Not mine."

"You know what you are?"

His hands curled into fists. "No. But I suppose you're going to tell me anyway."

"You're a hypocrite. That's what you are. When I do something you don't like, it's wrong but when you do the exact same thing, it's not."

"For the last time, Hannah there is nothing going on between Sophie and I," he shouted. "
