Chapter 296

WILLA

"No need to be so defensive, Willa," he drawled. "I don't bite. Why are you so flustered? You look like a frightened little birdie about to fly away any minute."
"Flustered?" I laughed. Or tried to anyway. "I- I am not flustered at all. It was just sex, wasn't it? In fact I barely remember what happened last night."
Lucius's grin turned wicked. "Really? Want me to refresh your memory? I won't mind."
"No," I said, barely restraining the snap in my voice. "I'm not interested."
"Somehow I highly doubt that. You shouldn't feel embarrassed, Willa. Like you said it was just sex. Something people do all the time. We were two consenting adults doing it under cover of darkness. Not in front of anyone. Besides, it's not as if I stole your virtue or anything."
He pushed his face close to mine. Close enough that I could see his slight morning stubble. Close enough to make me very uncomfortable. I managed to stand my ground.
Backing away was what he wanted. It would be proof that he was affecting me. A fact that wild horses wouldn't drag from me.
"Unlike you," he said. "I remember every sweet detail of last night. You were certainly not a virgin. Tight but... not a virgin."
I curled my fingers into fists to stop myself from slapping his face. Something I badly wanted to do.
"Shut. Up," I hissed through my teeth. I darted a look around. There was no one in sight, thank goodness! "Shut up or I swear I'll-"
Lucian abruptly straightened. He put out his hands, palm up.
"Relax," he said. "Don't be so uptight. No one's here." He winked. "What happened between us will be our little secret." He nodded in the direction of the camp. In a flash, the teasing seductive light had disappeared from his eyes. He was once more the practical Lucian. "Come on. Let's go and get some breakfast."

******************
I watched the guys keep bringing crates of beer. Some came with food, raw and canned, neatly wrapped up in foil or plastic bags.
During our time here, some people had been selected to buy stuff we needed, especially food, at the nearest town. Today the booze they had brought back seemed to be much more than the food.
I supposed it was because today was the last day we would spending here. From all indications, there was going to be a party tonight.
"Here," a guy said, handing me a plate full of toast and sausages with a steaming tin cup of coffee.
I muttered my thanks. I stole a glance at Lucian as I bit into my toast. We weren't seating together.
There were two others sitting on the grass between him and me. He wasn't even looking my way.
All morning Naomi had been desperately trying to get Lucian's ttention. If I weren't so affected by the current situation, I would have laughed.
Though it was still so early in the morning was wearing lipstick. She had on a tight blouse that pushed her large breasts almost out of the neckline plus a mini skirt.
She was talking way too loudly with her friends, laughing at comments that weren't the least bit funny and flirting with any guy that passed close enough to her.
Every now and then, she stole glances over her shoulder at Lucian who was pointedly ignoring her.
Each time she did that and saw Lucian wasn't looking her way, she would become a little more desperate. A little more loud.
I rolled my eyes. Talk about desperate for attention!
Lucian though...
I watched him, still and silent, slowly chewing his toast. I couldn't even guess what was going on in that mind of his. I wish I knew.
Suddenly, without any warning, he stood up. He looked straight at me before I could look away.
I turned my body slightly away. Barely paying attention to what I was doing, I took a large gulp of my coffee.
The liquid scalded my tongue, brought tears of pain to my eyes. I struggled not to cough.
I didn't see him but I felt him drop into the grass beside me.
"You've been staring all morning," he said and I heard the smile in his voice. "Is there something you want to say to me?"
"I wasn't staring at you," I snapped. "I was looking at something else. You are not the only one here, are you?"
"Still, I could have sworn-"
"Maybe your arrogance makes you think you're the only one here worth looking at. How could you even know I was staring if you weren't staring at me too."
"Touche'" he murmured.
"Just let me eat my breakfast. In peace."
Lucian nodded and smiled, looking very pleased about something. But what?
