Chapter 016

“I don’t care about that thing. When did these boys transfer to your school?” He sounded like he had a lump in his throat, but I knew he was just angry—too angry.

And it was all Hannah’s fault. Those brothers would have never gotten in my way if not for her. And my father wouldn’t be staring at me like I had somehow swallowed a cup full of shit.

“They came here a few days ago. I was talking to Hannah, and they started to disrespect me.”

“And what caused the fight today? The same girl?”

I was too ashamed to talk, so I nodded. He shook his head and rubbed his nose in annoyance.

“I can’t believe my authority was challenged by boys your age, and you did nothing. You’re absolutely useless.”

“I’m sorry—”

“Be sorry for yourself,” he rose to his feet. “Why did you come here? Did you think I would pick up a stick and beat up your schoolmates?”

I hesitated for a second, wondering if my next words were reasonable. I had already pissed him off, and it would take just one wrong statement for him to kick me out of the room.

Having decided that I had no other option, I cleared my throat. “I want to mark Hannah. She should be brought here, and once I’ve dealt with her, I’ll put my mark all over her for them to see.”

“And what purpose will that serve? My beta’s daughter has already been arranged for you. She will be your Luna, so I don’t want you baring your teeth in that dirty blood.”

My jaw twitched as I tried to control myself. This was not about Julia or her father. This was about me showing dominance and letting everyone know I was not weak.

“Julia will still be my Luna, but I must teach those boys a lesson.” I leaned closer to him. “I just need you to send guards to Hannah’s house and get her. She’s all I need.”

He paused for a moment, watching me carefully. One way or the other, he knew I was going to get my revenge, and he wanted me to.

"Very well. I'll send some guards to bring her here immediately." He pressed the intercom on his desk and ordered four guards to come to the meeting room immediately.

When they arrived and bowed, he gave them instructions as I listened.

"Go to the Baker’s house and bring the young girl. I don’t care how she arrives but make sure she gets here. If her mother puts up a fight, get rid of her.”

*************

I sat in the seat opposite my father, my feet tapping impatiently on the floor. It had been an hour since the guards left to get Hannah, and I was growing increasingly impatient by the minute. I glanced at my watch for what felt like the hundredth time, my frustration mounting.

How long would it take four big men to get one girl? Except….Except she was not home, and her new shiny toys were protecting her.

Just as I was about to get up and express my concerns to my father, a knock at the door broke the silence. I paused and turned to face the door.

"Enter!" my father barked, and I smiled. Those were surely the guards with Hannah. It was finally time for me to teach her a lesson—one that she would live to tell everyone who dared to cross me again.

But I guess I spoke too soon.

The door creaked open, and the guards stumbled in. I found myself standing up in shock at the sight that beheld me.

I had expected to see them enter with Hannah, but they came back empty-handed. And worse, they looked battered and bruised, like they had fought a battle on their way there. What the hell!

My father sprang up as I was still lost in words. "What happened?"

The guards drew closer, their eyes fixed on the floor. My father looked like he could kill, and frankly, I was a little terrified of him at that moment. "Alpha, we...we encountered some resistance," one of them stammered.

"Resistance? From whom?"

The guards' voices trembled as he started to narrate what happened. "They...the guards from the ice stone pack surrounded the girl’s house, Alpha. We tried to get past them, but they were too strong. They overpowered us, and...and we couldn't even get inside."

At first, I thought I didn’t hear them well, but the look on my father’s face told me I heard them correctly. The guards from what? Did what?

In silence, my father motioned to the guard who had spoken earlier to come closer. He slowly went over to him, and I watched, knowing quite well that he would regret coming back without Hannah.

The guard started to beg as he, too, sensed the anger radiating from my father. “Alpha, we—we are sorry. We did not anticipate—” Before he could finish, my father grabbed his head and slammed it on the table.

I jolted back in shock with the other guards. But my father did not stop. Again and again, he slammed the guard's head on the table till he passed out, and blood started to pour out from the side of his head.

He pushed his body from the table, and it fell carelessly on the ground with a thud. I glanced between the body and my father, wondering if he was dead and if it was my father’s intention to kill him.

“Get out!” He yelled, and the guards started to scurry away. “And take this man out of here before his blood gets everywhere in this room.”

I felt like my tongue was tied as the guards carried the body and left the room. What had I caused?

My father sat slowly in his seat and wiped his bloodied fingers with a handkerchief. Then he looked up at me with so much anger that I thought I would melt under his gaze. “Hannah Baker and what’s left of her family will die. And you’re going to make sure of it.”
