Chapter 121

HANNAH

I jolted awake, swallowing back the scream bubbling up in my throat. The bedside lamp was turned all the way on, sending a soft glow of light through the room, but the images in my head were much clearer.

I choked on a sob. The only sounds in the room were my rapid, alarmed breathing and the ticking of a clock. I swallowed and tried to slow my heart rate down.

It was hard, especially when I could still see the thick spray of blood pouring from the hole in the guard's head and still hear the masked man say, 'Is she the one?' and then 'He's useless to us. Kill him.'

I could still see the fingers taking up the slack on the trigger and still hear the choked bangs of the guns.

Even now, it was hard to believe I had just had a dream. It was just as clear as the attack. I was just as scared as I was when Jace and I were attacked. The nightmare was no different, and I couldn’t help but pray for it to go away. I would drive me crazy to relieve those moments over and over again. I exhaled in a rush, focusing on the familiar things in my room and trying to blot the events of today that had triggered the nightmare.

Slowly, I sat up, hugged myself, and rocked to and fro. I willed myself to be calm, but my mind was spinning in a hundred different directions.

Now I was in danger, much more than I had ever been with Alpha Dawson, Asher, or Julia. I was dealing with new enemies, people I didn’t know and couldn’t see. I felt more scared than I had ever been in my life, wondering how long the hunt for me would last and how far it would stretch.

Greenstone was a pack far away from here. That meant the entire werewolf community now knew about me. How long would I be able to evade their attacks. Today I had gotten lucky. What would happen the next time? How many people would have to die because of me?

The deaths of the driver and guard were proof enough that a lot more people would get hurt before this was over.

But when would it be over? The tortured man had said people would kill for my blood, and it terrified me. How many people out there were hunting me simply for my powers? Many Alphas would desire to be more powerful, and they would come after me.

I wrapped my hands around my knees. A whimper escaped my lips. Tears leaked out of my eyes as I squeezed them shut. The thought of sleep was far away from me now.

My mates and Alpha Wallace had sworn to protect me. But how could they when they were in danger themselves?

*********

As I walked through the doors, I told myself it would get better. Eventually. Even though it didn't seem like it at the moment. People were still staring. Worse, they had stopped pretending not to. They were now fully watching my every move like a bunch of detectives.

"See you two later," Chase and Jace called, waving as they hurried down the corridor that would take them to their classes.

They had a test this morning they were almost late for.

A large, warm hand slipped into mine.

"I'll take you to class," Cade said. When I didn't move, he tugged on my hand. "Come on." Cade didn’t take the class with them, so he was exempt.

Willa, humming a tune under her breath, skipped along in front of us.

I had taken just about a dozen steps when I realized Cade walking me to class was probably not the best way to avoid drawing attention to myself.

People were staring worse than ever, especially at our linked hands, which I tried and failed to tug out of his grip. I felt a flush heat up my cheeks as a group of girls walked past us with exaggerated slowness. A girl dropped her book on the floor and took a ridiculously long time picking it up.

"Cade," I hissed under my breath. I tried to dig my nails into his palm. "I can get to class myself. You don't need to escort me."

"I know," he said, flipping his free hand about carelessly. "But I want to. I'm not just taking you to class; I'm showing off my beautiful girlfriend and mate." He pressed our linked hands to his lips and chuckled darkly as his eyes met that of a guy in his class. My skin tingled then heated up from where his lips touched it. "I'm betting the guys all wish they were in my shoes right now. Well, they're not and can never be," he finished a little loudly.

The guy from Cade's class flushed and walked off as fast as his long legs could carry him.

I jerked my chin towards my locker.

"Need to get out my books," I said under my breath.

Cade let go of my hand one finger at a time. I rolled my eyes at me. When I had jerked open my locker, he slammed his hands on either side of me, effectively trapping me between my locker and his body.
