Chapter 165
HANNAH
Breakfast was normal.
Well, not exactly. I figured it would take some time for things to entirely return to normal around here but my mates were chatting as we ate. We were happy in each other's company and trying our best not to say anything on the subject of the war.
Chase was just asking if I would like to join him that morning at the training ground when Cade and Jace suddenly tensed up. I knew why even before I turned.
Even though it was still early in the morning, Sophie had on enough perfume to fill up a perfumery. What the hell was she doing here?
I looked around at the others. All of them seemed as surprised as I was to find her here. So that meant they hadn't asked her to join us for breakfast.
"Hello everyone," Sophie said cheerfully. "Beautiful morning, isn't it? I really slept well. Ice stone is as nice as I remembered it. Even better."
Pretending like she didn't see everyone at the table staring at her, Sophie put the plate of fruit salad she was holding on the spot beside Cade's plate and took the seat beside him.
She put a forkful into her mouth. "Hmm. Delicious. I like to eat light in the mornings, you know." She looked down at herself. "It helps me maintain my figure."
She laughed like she had told the world's funniest joke. No one else did.
Willa cleared her throat loudly. Sophie looked up at her with a pleasantly enquiring expression.
"What are you doing here?" Willa asked. "Breakfast here is strictly only for family."
Sophie's blue eyes widened. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know." She looked around the table. "I thought just anyone could join the table, friends inclusive."
"Well, you're wrong." Willa frowned at her plate and stabbed at a piece of meat. "It's just family here. For meals, the maids can bring whatever you want over to your room."
Sophie waited a beat, for one or all of the triplets to come to her defense. They didn't. Her face crumpled. She sighed.
"Oh well. I guess I'll have to leave then," she said. "I just didn't want to eat alone. Wanted some company."
"How about the men you came with? They are also eating alone, aren't they? You can join them," I pointed out stiffly.
"Good point," Willa muttered and I silently thanked her for backing me up on this one.
Sophie nodded. She picked up her plate and started to rise.
"Wait."
My eyes snapped to Cade. What the hell was he doing?
"Sit," he continued and when Sophie hesitated- pretended to hesitate-, he said, "You didn't know about our breakfast arrangements. Since you're already here, it would be rude to send you away so please... join us."
"Thank you," Sophie said brightly, beaming at Cade and then taking the rest of us in. "Thank you all."
I glared at Cade but he had gone back to his meal and wasn't even looking my way. What was the big idea, letting her stay after her behaviour of yesterday?
I pushed the food around on my plate and bore it for all of two minutes. The sight of Sophie smiling happily into her plate like the cat that had got the cream was too much for me.
I sprang to my feet, flung the napkin in the general direction of my plate. They all stopped eating at once.
"Hannah," Chase said. "Where are you going? You have barely even touched your food."
"I've lost my appetite," I said stiffly.
I stalked off. Behind me someone scraped back their chair.
I heard Sophie say, "It's okay. Continue eating. I'll go talk to her."
I walked faster, hoping for her sake she was not referring to me. I went outside, leaned all the balcony and inhaled the clean, fresh morning air. I took several deep breaths, trying to expel the anger I felt building up inside me.
As if the trouble with Dawson's pack was not enough, I now had to deal with a girl that reminded me very much of Julia.
Sophie was bad news. I knew it in my bones. But that wasn't the worst part. Why the hell were my mates, Cade especially, not taking a firmer hand with her?
"Hannah, right?"
I gritted my teeth. So she had followed me out here after all. I turned slowly. Sophie was smiling at me but there was a jeering look in her eyes she didn't bother to hide.
"What do you want?" I spat out.
"I came to find-"
"Why are you really doing here?"
Her innocent wide-eyed look didn't fool me for one moment.
"I told you I came to offer my support to Ice stone in this war," she said.
