Chapter 051
ASHER
My father shook his head. "No, she didn't. Hannah wasn't poisoned. Those boys were obviously lying. They stole Hannah away, and the story of there being a poisoning is just a big cover-up. Soon my spies will return and I'm sure they'll bring reports of Hannah spotted in Icestone pack, alive and well." He slammed a fist into his palm. "And then when I have my confirmation, I'll deal with those bastards, teach them a lesson for double-crossing me."
"No," I said.
He looked up at me sharply. "No?"
"No, you've got it all wrong, Dad. It's not a plot by the Wallace's. Hannah was really poisoned. Julia confessed to doing it before I brought her here."
That seemed to give him pause. He turned to Julia again in surprise.
"She confessed?" he said.
"Yes. As much as it pains me to say this, I knew Wallace's sons were telling the truth. They wouldn't have come here if Hannah was okay. They were willing enough to let her go when they thought she had chosen me as her mate."
Julia, now crying softly, turned away from the force of my father's stare. He looked at her for a long time, then said very quietly, "Tell me the truth, Julia. Is it true that you poisoned Hannah?"
"I'm sorry, Alpha." She dissolved into tears and didn't say anything anymore.
"Oh, for fuck's sake, shut your mouth, Julia," I yelled. "We both know that you're not the least sorry, so stop shedding those crocodile tears. Now tell my father the truth about what you did, or I'll hurt you so bad. I swear I won't stop even when you beg me to."
She gulped and fell silent at once.
"It's true. I poisoned her," Julia admitted in a tiny voice. “But I didn’t mean to do it. She upset me and pushed me to the wall.”
My father dropped into his chair, and leaned back on it. He put the tips of his fingers together, which was what he did whenever he was deep in thought. Now Julia began to shiver in fright.
I was glad. At least now, she realized the enormity of what she had done. Whatever punishment my father decided to mete out to her was fine by me. In fact, I would give her double.
After a long silence, my father shrugged. "Well, to tell the truth, Asher, I expected Julia to act that way."
My eyes bulged. I wasn't sure I had heard correctly.
"What?" I exclaimed.
He gave me a slightly disdainful look.
"Why do you look so surprised?" he said. "What she did was a typical reaction from anyone who is in her position. It was a reaction that actually shows power. She didn't allow Hannah to take her place. Now, that's tenacity. That's fighting for what you want and taking it, not minding how you get it. She has qualities of a great Luna and I’m impressed.”
He wagged his finger at me as though telling me to pay attention to that life lesson.
There were so many things I wanted to say, but at the moment, I was dumbfounded. When I had brought Julia here, I had not expected this sort of reaction from my father.
What happened to hauling Julia over the coals for poisoning Hannah?
My father glanced at the shivering heap that was Julia.
"What poison did you give her?" he asked as though he was asking her what she had eaten for dinner.
"W-wolfsbane," she stammered, now looking a bit proud of herself.
I gasped. I heard my father give a startled ejaculation. Rage coursed like lava all over my body. I rushed towards Julia, and slapped her twice. Her head rocked back as she screamed in pain. I gripped her hair, tilted her head backward with it so she was looking right into my eyes. The mascara had mingled with her tears. It left black, wavy streaks on both sides of her face.
"You fucking bitch!" I yelled, my voice shaking with anger and rising to shout. It took all my control not to snap her neck then and there. "Do you know the implications of what you've done? Do you?"
"Let her go."
My father's voice came from right behind me.
"But she poisoned-"
"Yes. But there is no use in crying over spilt milk, is there? There is nothing you can do now. Or are you suddenly a magician?”
Somehow, those words sounded ominous although I was yet to grasp their implication. I pushed Julia away from me. She fell to the floor sobbing. I turned to face my father.
"What do you mean?" I asked him.
"Use your head, son. Hannah was poisoned with wolfsbane. That means the girl is certainly dead. No one survives wolfsbane, especially not a weakling."
