Chapter 162
HANNAH
"So you're one of the Ice stone bitches, huh?" said the large boy.
The girl went white.
"I don't- I don't know about the attack," she squeaked in a tiny voice. "Please-"
"Shut up!" he said, jutting his head forward.
The other boy grabbed her blouse and pulled her up. She beat feebly at his hands. His grip only tightened.
"You just wait until we're done with you," he said, smiling.
He raised his hand. In a flash I was out of my seat and was grabbing that hand. He looked back in surprise. The whole class went silent.
"What are you-" began the boy.
"Leave her alone and get out of this class," I said quietly.
He shook off my grip and shoved me. Not expecting that, I stumbled back a couple of steps.
"Stay out of this or we'll fix you next," he threatened.
"Do I look like I'm scared of the bunch of you?" I asked, moving forward and staring at him full in the face. "You two are a bunch of cowards. You know that, right?"
The boy flushed. "You don't dare speak to us like-"
"I'll speak to you anyhow I damn well like, coward!" The boy reared back. "Yes, you both ar too frightened to pick on someone your own size. If you weren't, how come you chose the weakest looking member of Ice stone to bully? You could have tried to pick on me and Willa but you conveniently forgot we're from Ice stone, didn't you? You want to act so tough in front of the whole school meanwhile you're soft. Pathetic." I grabbed the boy's collar, shoved him against the wall. "Now get out if you don't want me to hurt you really bad."
A fist slammed into my back, sending me stumbling a few steps into the boy. I knew, without turning, it was the second asshole.
"Did you just hit her?"
I turned to see Cade. He wasn't looking at me but at the boy who had hit me. Cade's eyes were red and blazing. His face was twisted into a snarling mask.
The boy started to back away, caught himself and stood his ground.
"She asked for it," the boy whined. "We didn't even come for her. We-"
He didn't get to complete the rest of his sentence. Cade's fist smashed into his jaw, sending him sprawling on the floor. The other boy jumped back with a cry.
Then Cade was on him, his fists punching away at the boy's face. The boy's resistance grew weaker and weaker. Soon his face was a bloody mess. Yet Cade did not stop.
In a moment I would step in, I told myself.
When I looked at the class I saw they all had the hating, appalled expression they had when I had killed Julia and the arena. It didn't matter to them that these boys had started it. All they saw was a savage hammering away at someone who was trying vainly to shield his face.
As I started to reach for Cade's shoulder, he got off the boy. He stood over him, kicked him in the ribs. The boy curled in on himself, grunting in pain.
"That will teach you," Cade said in between pants. "Lay your hands on Hannah again and you'll fucking loose that hand."
The boy managed to stand then he took off in a stumbling run. The other boy followed him.
Cade turned to me and Willa.
"Grab your things. We're leaving," he said.
Without arguing Willa and I grabbed our bags. I had had enough of school for the day anyway. As we stepped out the door of the classroom, I heard screams, yells, sudden loud bangs. My once orderly school was obviously in chaos. I couldn't even spot teachers anywhere.
"Cade, what's happening?" I said, suddenly realizing he would know about this.
That had to be why he had come to my class in the first place.
Cade's brows drew together. "Breakstone is attacking Ice stone. It's happening all over the school." He grimaced as we heard the sound of something heavy being overturned. Willa gasped, clutched her bag tighter. The screams and yells grew closer and louder. "People are getting injured. It's a mess."
I stopped in the middle of the hallway. Cade grabbed my elbow and tugged.
"Come on. Let's go," he urged. "In a few minutes, it's going to be madness all over school and then it will be harder to get out."
"We can put an end to this," I said, digging in my heels. "If we find Asher, I'll make him put a stop to these stupid rumours."
"Asher's not in school," Cade said. "I checked. Asher and his father are probably hiding while the stupid students hurt themselves."
