Chapter 175

HANNAH

"That girl poisoned it," Jace gasped.

Of course it was Sophie!

I should have known. Not satisfied with all the trouble she had caused, she had resorted to murder.

Willa and my mates all expressed their surprise. But I wasn't surprised. Not really.

For girls like Sophie, it was all or nothing. She couldn't have Cade, so she figured no one else would. That pretty face of hers covered a heart as ugly as sin.

"Are we the first people you've served?" I asked, talking over the others.

"Yes," the maids echoed.

"Good. Don't serve anyone else. Throw away the tea and all the food. Throw away every cooking ingredient in the kitchen. She could have poisoned anyone of them. Go quickly!"

The maids scrambled to their feet, cleared the table and hurriedly went to obey.

"Guards!" Cade bellowed, the veins standing out on his neck.

The door opened at once. Two guards marched in.

"Find Sophie," Cade ordered. "Bring her- No. Drag her down here. Go!"

We all sat in tense silence, waiting for the guards to return. My fingers on the table kept twitching. They were itching to wrap themselves around a part of Sophie's body. Preferably her neck.

About fifteen minutes later, the guards returned. We all looked from them to the empty corridor beyond through which no one else was coming.

"The Alpha's daughter already left," one of the guards said.

Cade, cursing, slammed a fist on the table. "Fuck that! Find her and bring her to me."

"She left the pack very early this morning," the second guard said. "She was last spotted at the borders. She could be anywhere by now."

"The cowardly bitch!" Cade cursed. "She thought she would be out of reach as we all died!"

"Get out," Chase growled at the guards.

Willa pressed herself against the wall, clutching her heart and staring at the spot where her tea cup had been. I could see the naked terror in her eyes, terror that she would have been poisoned twice in just a few weeks. Only this time, the poison would have been fatal.

My fingers curled around the edge of the table.

"I swear," I said. "If I ever get my hands on Sophie, I'll hurt her so much that she'll wish she had been poisoned."

Jace combed his fingers through his hair. "What sort of person carries around poison anyway? That girl must be twisted as fuck!"

"Why do you sound so surprised?" Chase said. "Have you forgotten so soon how obsessive she used to be? For people like that, there's only a very thin, very blurred line between love and hate. The only mistake we made was letting her stay here. We should have sent her back to her pack- What?"

A guard had come in with the air of delivering a very important message. The guard bowed.

"There's a man sitting in front of the gates of the estate," he said, addressing me. "He's not a member of our pack-"

"One of the guests then," said Jace.

The guard shook his head. "No, he's not. We don't know how he got past the pack's borders."

"Who is he? And why is this important to me?" I asked.

"The man says you know him, that he's someone important you must see. He said he has something to tell you that will change everything. We tried to turn him away but he wouldn't say anything else. Only insisted on seeing you."

"It's pretty obvious, isn't it?" Cade said, glaring at the guard. "The man is a spy, probably sent to target Hannah. She's not going to see him. Get him out of here but first make sure you know how he got through the borders so it doesn't happen again."

The guard bowed, started to leave.

"Wait," I called out, stopping him in his tracks. "I'll see him."

"Hannah..." Willa said. "This is not a good idea and you know it. In case you've forgotten, we are at war. This could be a trick to-"

"I know," I said. "But something tells me I have to see this man. Take me to him."

My mates didn't approve of my decision but they were forced to accept it when I started following the guard. He led us to the gates of the estate. He looked up, gave a signal and it opened.

There was a man standing in front of it with his back to me. He was painfully thin and a little bent. He had on thick clothes that were now falling apart one loose thread at a time. Along one shoulder was slung a small knapsack.

I stopped walking. There was something very familiar about the man's figure. Slowly, he turned and I saw his face.

I caught my breath.

"Dad?" I gasped.
