Chapter 239
WILLA
Carmen gasped and clapped her hands excitedly. "Oh. I know. I know. A necklace?"
"A ring?" Lisa asked, smiling brightly.
"No, silly. He got me that two months ago. Take another guess." Naomi said.
"A dress?" Lisa said tentatively.
Naomi shook her dark curls. A little smile curved her lips as she unlocked her drawer and brought out a pretty jewel case.
"A charm bracelet!" she announced as she opened it.
Lisa and Carmen took the bracelet gingerly, passed it around, oohed and aahed over it while Naomi beamed, pleased at the attention she was getting.
Finally the bracelet was once more stowed away in the jewel case and locked up in the drawer.
"You won't guess how much that cost," Naomi said.
"How much?" Lisa asked.
Naomi leaned forward, whispered a price which made both girls gasp. Their eyes grew wide as saucers.
"That's wickedly expensive!" Carmen exclaimed.
Naomi rolled her eyes. "Duh! He's the Lycan Prince. The guy's practically made of money. Just a couple of days ago, he got me a bouquet of fresh roses I could hardly lift. It had the cutest note stuck to it."
Said note made an appearance. Naomi's friends exclaimed over it too.
I lay in bed with one hand over my eyes, trying my damnedest to tune them out. I couldn't. As long as the conversation involved Lucian, I just couldn't seem to pretend not to care.
I thought of Theron and the offer I had made. Why had he rejected me so though?
Was I that bad, that undesirable? I would have thought most guys would have jumped at the chance to be in a relationship with me, even if it was a fake one.
All my life I had been told I was beautiful. Could that have been something everyone was required to tell the Alpha's only daughter?
I sighed, rolled over so I could stare at the candy pink wall. Deep down I knew I was being silly of course.
I wasn't bad looking at all but it was so hard to hold on to your self esteem when it was slowly but surely being ripped apart in too many directions.
How badly I missed Hannah! I wanted to call her, tell her everything that was going on, listen to her comforting words.
But I wouldn't call her. Not just yet. Not until I had everything under some sort of control.
My roommate's voices grew distant, then faint. I was drifting off to sleep. I welcomed it.
I started awake some time later. Blinking rapidly, I looked around. Some sound had awakened me.
There was a knock on the door. Then another.
The door opened. In stepped Lucian still dressed in the clothes from the wolfing ceremony. The breath I had been unthinkingly drawing into my lungs dropped away to nothing.
I sat up quickly, waited for him to look my way. He didn't.
I might have been a bug on the wall for all the attention he paid me. Lisa and Carmen got off their beds like they had been stung out of it.
"Lucian!" Carmen said with a little giggle. "So nice to see you. We weren't expecting you to drop by tonight."
Lucian nodded at them.
"Hello ladies," he said quietly. "I'm not staying tonight." He turned to Noami who looked like she was about to burst with happiness. His expression softened. "I just came to pick up Naomi here. Get dressed, baby, you and I are going out."
Noami squealed in excitement. She hopped off the bed, dashed to her wardrobe, grabbed a pair of jeans and struggled into them.
She spun around slowly, held out her arms.
"How do I look?" she said.
Lucian regarded her. He stood with his back to me.
I felt like throwing something at his head. Would it kill him to look my way even once?
Look at me, I wanted to scream. You won't me just the way I want you, so stop fighting it!
"Perfect as always," he drawled still with his eyes on Naomi. "Are you ready?"
"I was born ready," she said and snatched up her purse. "Just give me a teeny second."
She hurried over to the mirror, the edges plastered over with pictures of herself. Picking up a hair brush, she ran it through her curls.
It was then that Lucian turned. Slowly. Our eyes met.
His were unreadable. I daresay mine weren't. I would probably have shamelessly thrown myself at his feet again if we didn't have an audience.
"All done!" Naomi chirped, claiming his attention once more.
His eyes roamed lazily over her figure. Roses bloomed in Naomi's cheeks.
Lucian slipped his arm around Noami's waist on their way out the door and I felt myself die a little more inside.
