Chapter 109
HANNAH
I felt her bones crack and I knew I would never have to hear her disrespect my father ever again.
The whole arena was a whirlpool of noise, different noises that I couldn't interpret. At least not yet.
But among them and getting closer with each second was a long, drawn-out cry of pain. I stepped aside just as Lucius came running, skidding to a halt in front of his daughter's body.
Her form had automatically become human after she had drawn her last breath. Now her father, kneeling beside her, held up her body in his arms.
"Julia!" he shouted. "Julia. Open your eyes, damnit! Look at me. Say something."
He shook her. Her head and body flopped up and down like broken doll's. I could have told him she wouldn't ever move or speak again, but he was already finding that out for himself. He wanted this; he had wanted his daughter to rip me to shreds, but underestimating me was his only flaw.
I heard my name, coming from my mates, a welcome sound throughout all the madness.
"Hannah, you did it," Cade cried, his eyes shining with love and pride and yes, a little fear.
The three of them were running, holding a large cloak between them. They held up the cloth, surrounding me on all sides as I began to shift into my human form. I thrust my hands into the sleeves and belted the cloak.
Something white intruded on the edges of my vision. My hair. My white hair.
Instinctively, I started to brush it back then stopped. I felt a laugh bubbling up in my throat at the absurdity of still trying to hide my hair when everyone had seen me shift. They knew who I was now, part of the reason half of the arena had suddenly disappeared.
I fought down the laughter, recognizing it for what it was- hysteria.
Strong warm hands kneaded my injured back, my shoulders, my arm. My mate's way of telling me that they were there for me.
"You!"
I recognized Lucius's now cracked voice.
"Cade," I said softly, tugging on his arm.
He gave me a questioning look. I nodded, wordlessly telling him that I was fine and could handle it. He reluctantly stepped out of my way and then I was looking directly into Lucius's hate filled eyes. The only thing redder than his eyes was his shirt soaked with his daughter's blood.
"What did you do her?" he screamed, flecks of spit flying from his lips. He looked half out of his mind. "What did you do to my daughter? What-"
"I killed her," I said cooly. "You wanted a blood duel, didn't you? Well, you got exactly what you wanted." I glanced at the blood soaking through the sand. "That's blood on the ground. Julia's blood."
Lucius flew into a rage and rushed toward me. Cade pushed him away, while Chase took a position in front, a clear message that they didn’t mind killing him to protect me.
I felt rather than saw my mates stiffen as Dawson and Edward walked towards us. Dawson looked cold and in control. Or at least he tried to.
He definitely had more guts than his son, who trailed behind them on shaky legs that looked like they would give out on him at any moment. He stopped and glanced at Julia.
That did it for him. He bent at the waist, made a horrible retching sound, and started puking his guts out.
"Wimp," I heard Jace hiss from somewhere behind me.
I totally agreed. I was sure the crowd now watching a future Alpha vomit his breakfast would agree too. He must have been present during their plan, but seeing the sight of blood was too gruesome for him? Or had he always assumed it would be me?
Lucius rocked back and forth, faster and faster. Suddenly, before Dawson and Edward reached us, he stopped. From a strap in his boots, he pulled out a wicked-looking knife, sprang up, and lunged at me.
It was a weak, pathetic attempt, one I could easily have avoided with my wolf's power still thrumming inside me. Before I could move, Chase stepped forward. He grabbed Lucius's arm and squeezed it hard.
A hiss of pain escaped Lucius's lips, and he cried out. The knife fell to the ground.
"Touch or try to touch her again, and I swear it will be the last thing you ever do," Chase hissed.
"I'll kill her," Lucius snarled. “I’ll kill that bloody witch! My daughter!”
He hadn't even spared Chase a glance. His eyes were fixed on me. I didn’t mind another duel. I would kill him faster than I killed Julia and make sure his body would have no form to be mourned.
"Guards!" Dawson barked. "Restrain him." He ordered them, pointing at Lucius. Dawson looked paranoid, and I was sure it had to do with his fear of Lucius rambling and exposing them.
As the guards closed in on Lucius, he started to struggle. He screamed swear words, threatening to punish them with his authority as Beta. When they held him firmly with his hands clasped behind his back, he fell to pieces.
Tears and snot ran down his face. It was pathetic and revolting to watch.
"Your wolf. It's white," Alpha Dawson said, low enough that no one but me could hear.
He obviously didn't care anymore about the stupid man who had allowed his daughter to be used as a pawn in his games.
"I fought the duel you wanted so badly. Alpha," I added mockingly.
His lips peeled back from his teeth and instant before he put back on his mask of control. "Don't evade the question, girl! Your wolf is white. How?"
