Chapter 309
WILLA
One would think we were the only couple on campus! The stares and whispers made me long to give Theron a piece of my mind.
"Willa!" someone called from behind me.
I pushed my bag higher up my shoulder and pretended I didn't hear my name.
"Willa!" the voice said again.
The speaker, Ava, a girl in my year had caught up with me. Her big eyes were almost bugging out of her head.
She laughed and nudged me in the arm, almost knocking me sideways into someone's locker.
"Hi, Ava," I murmured, moving a few steps away from her.
"Wow! I can't believe Theron actually did that!" she gushed. "It was so romantic. You are one lucky girl, Willa. I could die of jealousy. Theron is such a catch."
She waited for me to say something. I only walked faster. Ava was not to be put off.
"So are you two really a thing now?" she asked, her large eyes shining with curiousity.
"You know how it is," I said, fighting to keep back a weary sigh. Couldn't she see that I didn't want to talk about it? "It's... complicated."
Ava smiled and nodded. "But complicated in a good way, right?"
How could anything be complicated in a good way? I asked myself.
I nodded.
"Cool," Ava said and hurried off to meet her waiting friends.
They were talking with their heads close together even before they had taken a few steps. I had a pretty good idea of what or in this case, who they were talking about.
It was then I noticed the stares from the vampires. Their pale faces were like hard masks when they looked at me.
Not one of them smiled. It was clear that they did not approve of whatever was going on between me and Theron.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. I couldn't really pay attention in class because people wouldn't stop pointing at me and whispering even in class.
After my last class of the day, I hurried to the library, where I spotted Sienna poring over a large book that took up half the table.
I dropped into the chair next to her with a relieved sigh. I was counting on at least an hour of peace and quiet before I had to go back to my dorm room.
Sienna immediately closed the book when she saw who it was. She pushed it aside and grinned at me.
"Tell me," she said, sinking her voice to a whisper. "Are you and Theron official now?"
"For crying out loud, not you too," I groaned, passing my hand over my face.
"Not me- Wait. What do you mean? Come on, Willa. Spill! Is he your boyfriend now?"
"It's not that simple," I said.
When Sienna still showed no signs of dropping the subject, I went on to tell her about the arrangement Theron and I had made.
"It's all part of the plan," I explained. "to make Sylvia jealous. Theron wants her back, you see. So far I'll say it's working. So, no. Theron and I are not really a couple."
I deliberately left out the part about my feelings for Lucian. I didn't think I could take one more person digging into that right now.
Maybe I would tell Sienna later but for now, I would keep it to myself.
"Ah," Sienna said, nodding to herself. "So it's all a plan. Makes sense. So why aren't you happy that it's working out?"
"How do you know I'm not happy about it?" I said, hoping to deflect the question.
"Because I know you. That frown you're wearing looks like it's been painted on. Come on. Talk to me."
"I don't know why I feel like this," I admitted. "Maybe it's because of Lucian. Seeing him so angry makes me think I might have permanently ruined my chances with him. That's if I even had any chances at all. I've been thinking... Maybe I should just stop already. I can't seem to figure out if I like Lucian or hate him or..." I dragged my fingers through my hair. "It's all so damned complicated I don't know what to do."
Sienna gave my shoulder a friendly pat and said, "I'll give you a little advice. Girl to girl. What you have to do now is set things straight with Lucian."
"No-"
"Oh yes," she said firmly. "You can't avoid that forever. Talk to him. Find out how he really feels about you. If you don't talk it out, you'll just keep making assumptions about him and what he thinks of you."
Sienna was right. But how would I even approach Lucian when the memory of slamming my door in his face was still very fresh in my mind?
